Though the American version of The Office is one of the increasingly rare success stories when it comes to "translating" British shows, it still can't hold a candle to the mad genius of the original. Talking up the show at this point is likely useless, but the entire collection has a new DVD release, and it's something well worth putting on your radar for potential gifts.

The only real question here is whether or not a new version of the full series release is actually necessary, and/or whether or not there is enough new content to qualify as sufficiently dissimilar from the one that already exists.

The answer is probably no, if I'm being honest, but I'm a sucker for the show, and liable to encourage purchasing anything that might come along. What works for this particular release is simply the timing, and the fact that there are people who still haven't made the leap from new Office to old Office. You know it's awesome, and as the New York Times said, "pretty much the funniest show ever," but some of your friends are still holdouts, and you are much more likely to buy them something that was just released, as opposed to something that came out a few years ago.

That said, there are some very cool additions to the bonus features, and all the originals, which were a nice assortment to begin with. It's just that, for most people, it may not seem like there is an entire world of new value added to the release. Rare indeed is the person who is going to upgrade their complete series to the special edition.

On the other hand, if you haven't taken the leap already, or know someone who has put off owning the entire series, then we are simply at a point where we have upgraded the already no-brainer status of the purchase.

Each episode on the first series now comes with an introduction, and you get an assortment of very cool interviews with Gervais, Merchant, and some special guests (see full details below). You also get the full original pilot, and a new featurette Comedy Connections: The Office, which is a retrospective of sorts, revisiting the show, its creation, and the effects of its popularity.

The introductions and interviews are worth more than you might expect, and what you have to keep in mind is that these are put together by the people who created The Office. The same, more or less, is true of the retrospective, which is thoroughly entertaining, and something fans will love.

Like I said, it doesn't seem like much additional content, but it's a show that can't be revisited too many times. Gervais' effort to actually focus a series on an obnoxious tool, in a situation built around dreary tedium and the antics of those who do and do not find any interest in their relative position on the laughably meaningless job totem pole, changed comedy television worldwide, and the influence of the show can be seen in virtually everything that has come along since.

The release itself probably isn't the gold standard of necessary ventures, but there are enough people who still need to pick this up to make it worthwhile. Someone on your holiday list will love you. Probably you.

Available now, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is an impressive Blu-Ray release, and for a lot of reasons. Not only is the film an improvement over Part 1 (original review below), but the bonus features are impressive, and you have to keep in mind that fans are very aware that the Ultimate Edition is on its way down the line.

Of course, besides that, the video is supremely impressive and is sure to run everywhere Blu-Ray players are sold throughout the holiday season. The colors and panoramic views showoff best perhaps, but more interesting to Blu-Ray fans is the unmatched perfection of the darks and shadows in a film that is full of opportunities. You'll impress people with your Blu-Ray either way here, but if you want to convince someone, just put the darker scenes of this one on next to a standard DVD.

As for the special features, there are several here that make this a must-own for fans of the franchise, possibly even for those who are already committed to the idea that they are getting the Ultimate Edition when it comes out. That's probably something you'll never hear me say again, but I wouldn't be surprised to find quite a number of fans who don't want to wait, and are willing to upgrade when the time comes.

Depending on the particular bent of your own fandom, possibly the most interesting offering here is A Conversation with J.K. Rowling and Daniel Radcliffe. Running somewhere around an hour, it's finally time to relive the entire spectacle with the two names that are most synonymous with the boy who lived. I wouldn't call the conversation really Hallows Part 2 specific in any way, but it is rather The End specific, and they discuss everything about bringing the character to life, and moving from page to screen.

While not actually the world's biggest Potter fan myself, this is worth watching for anyone who is remotely interested in the phenomenon, and a special treat for those who are fans. After so many movies, and different editions of home releases, including countless special features, this is probably the best one that has ever come out of the franchise. It isn't movie magic, or showing off the bells and whistles, but it gets at the heart of what makes people such devoted fans, and as I said, it is a great addition even for those who aren't really fans.

The release also includes the increasingly common Maximum Movie Mode. I'm generally not a fan of such modes, though a few have won me over in the past. This one is a little tricky, because I don't love the final product on the whole, but the featurettes you explore via this mode are good efforts, showcasing a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that fans will really enjoy. It's hosted by Neville Longbottom, and runs through such things as the costumes, sets, and how some of the magic is made to look fantastically magical. Fans will love running through the movie in this mode, but the featurettes on their own are worth rather more than bothering with putting this mode together just because we can.

You've also got some other featurettes available, and some additional scenes, but the meat of the release is the interview and the featurettes contained in the MMM. The die-hards are going to enjoy the inclusion of some deleted scenes, but they aren't necessarily world-altering cuts here. The Goblins of Gringotts is a nice, if more or less average, behind-the-scenes look at what is involved in getting the goblins gobliny. On the other hand, it has Warwick Davis quite a bit, and that's a sell in itself.

Finally, you've got The Women of Harry Potter, which features Rowling discussing the creation of the female characters in the books, and to a certain extent how she wanted to make sure they were portrayed in the films. She goes to great lengths to explain her theories of these characters, their motivations, and how she intended for them to be brought to life. While certainly something worthwhile for fans, this is a nice inclusion simply for the focus on the female characters and their contribution to the overall abilities of the books and films. It's the kind of thing no one would miss if it weren't there, and that makes it all the more interesting to find it here. Honestly, throughout the entire Potter craze, the one thing that has always left me scratching my head is the fact that the women in the books are so underrepresented (in the general public psyche sense) as the key elements in delivering the thematic statements.

Overall, you have to balance this release against a lot of things for the ultimate judgment. That is, for those who need any judgment at all. It's not only a world of strange home video releases, re-releases, and special editions, but it is also within a massive franchise. I can't imagine another film which would find me recommending a purchase when I know another release (which is actually even this release inclusive) is coming, and I know I'm going to recommending buying that also, but I find I have to here. Fans will not be disappointed, and the simple fact that this release is fully loaded is a testament to the commitment to the fans of all concerned.

As I said, I'm not a big Potter fan, and you'll shortly see that the film only managed 3.5 out of 5 stars from me, but the Blu-Ray is five stars.

Movie Review

It's all come to a close now, and the only thing left is the final port in the list of increasingly purposeless reviews. As fans the world over reflect on the end of an era, and the amazing, ten-year journey they've been a part of, I can't help but focus on the collective word count that has been dedicated to the franchise, none of which made a lick of difference to anyone.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 manages a strange counterpoint to Part 1, being something of a headlong race through action scenes and general intensity, whereas Part 1 was largely a test of your ability to stay awake. The most interesting note there is simply the fallacy that smashing together extremes somehow balances out in the end.

Part 1 needed something to happen, whether anything happened in the book or not, and Part 2 needed less to happen, and to move more slowly through most of what it had.

We jump in where only true-believers and the recently refreshed will remember leaving off (sort of), and that's in a small shanty by the sea. A small band of good guys are now with the dynamic trio, and they've got a goblin. The first point on the agenda is breaking into Gringott's to find out if Bellatrix Lestrange's vault contains one of the Horcruxes.

Here comes a wild ride on the vault carts we've seen before, a run-in with a dragon, and several other elements that are bound to make many absent-mindedly fidget with the video game controllers they aren't actually holding. On the other hand, kudos to Helena Bonham Carter's short stint as Hermoine Polyjuiced as Bellatrix.

As events unfold, Harry's connection to Voldemort becomes stronger, and harder for him to control, which works out well, because there doesn't seem any other way that we were going to find out where the other Horcruxes were, and Harry discovers that one of them is at Hogwarts. Unfortunately, Voldemort learns that Harry has returned, and his dark army surrounds the place. Fabulous battles ensue, tides turn, Voldemort can't quite work out why his fantastically all-powerful wand is somewhat on the blink, and Harry is forced to revisit that pesky prophecy that suggests that for Voldemort to die, Harry must as well.

If there is any ultimate point (or redeeming quality) for the franchise, beyond a bit of fluffy fun for those of the appropriate age, it is by way of the "Snape revelation," and Harry's reaction to it. That, and the massive, multi-book lead-in to the single line - "Of course, it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on Earth should that mean that it's not real?"

The second of these is delivered rather brilliantly in the film, though in a way that perhaps does not have Dumbledore pausing long enough, or cocking his head and raising his eyebrow at Harry enough, but the second is all but lost in the sea of film translation. Though our trip through Snape's memories is given upwards of two minutes on screen, there is no power behind it, and you're hard-pressed to get anything out of the adventure, beyond the dull addition of checks to Harry's to-do list.

If you got anything of the richness and complexity of character and story that come about as a result of deconstructing Snape, and reworking him in your mind as what he has done, and who he is, comes to light, you really brought it with you. That's not an entirely unforgivable direction, but something has gone wrong when the action of the film leaves Harry no chance to actually give anything to the audience. Sure, we stare at him as he sits on a step for a few seconds, but if not for him calling Snape brave at the very end of the film, we might have thought he had no better ability to make out the point than we did.

Deathly Hallows 2 gives a decent effort in a lot of ways, and it soars far beyond Part 1 for entertainment value, but the end of such a massive adventure is where you want some of that slowness from Part 1 to creep in. Our wizards wander into their couples, Ron with Hermione, Harry with Ginny, but the audience only gets the occasional awkward kiss and the sudden appearance of children. Longbottom wins through to massive heroism, but the scene of his speech is bizarre, and serves mostly to showcase the curious fact that Voldemort is tremendously stupid (insofar as people are giving speeches and/or lolling about listening to them, as opposed to say... bleeding profusely, running for their lives, etc.).

Ultimately, Part 1 drags on for miles, only to be followed by something that feels like a Cliff's Notes version wrap-up. It is an enjoyable effort, but it is the kind of effort that spends several minutes staring at dragons and various magical gobbledygook, just to get the chance to whip out a bunch of things that have to be included. They kiss. He's dead. Pow. Bang. Zoom.

The trouble with the franchise, books and film, is that it thinks it can grow up with its readers, and now that Harry is "adult," we have, by way of some special magic, created something that is "for adults." That leaves us with a story and a telling that is fighting against itself, and is fun, but rather hollow. The first few movies were really pretty good, almost despite themselves (except Prisoner of Azkaban, which was brilliant), because they knew what they were, and were content to revel in it. These last two films know what they are as well, they're just wrong.

There is a certain mystical quality to Water for Elephants which is decidedly difficult to attribute to Director Francis Lawrence (of Constantine, I Am Legend, and music videos), but becomes easier to understand when you consider the Director of Cinematography is Rodrigo Prieto (Biutiful, Babel, Brokeback Mountain, Frida, Amores Perros, and many more).

It's the kind of thing that showcases the magic of film, because something, and I very specifically mean some very hard to describe or put your finger on thing, about what you're watching makes it nearly impossible to doubt that you're watching 1931, despite the vast and various failings of all the things that are meant to suggest 1931. That's magic.

It's a story about a young man who loses his parents tragically on the eve of his graduation from Cornell as a Veterinarian. He learns that his father mortgaged the family home to send him to school, and in the blink of an eye, he truly has nothing. With no ideas, he hopes to head for the big city, and in the black of night he hops a train that turns out to be the home of the travelling Benzini Bros. circus.

Said young man, Jacob (Robert Pattinson), learns that the circus might be able to use him, and he's game. Of course, he kicks off by shoveling horse stalls, but once we learn his background, we find better uses for his talents. This mainly comes by way of the fact that the show's star attraction involves the owner's wife, Marlena Rosenbluth (Reese Witherspoon), and her horses. A true jewel in the circus crown, Marlena is a star as much for her looks as her control of animals.

Speaking of animals Marlena has to control, the owner of the circus, August (Christoph Waltz), has run Benzini Bros. since he was nineteen and the previous owner did a runner with the last of the cash when things were at a low point. August is a pretty obvious victim of Napoleon syndrome, and his act and attitude are rather straight-forward. He rules with an iron hand, and whenever someone displeases him, or he simply needs to cull the ranks due to poor receipts, he simply has them chucked from the moving train.

Naturally, Jacob and Marlena don't take long in becoming drawn to each other, and insofar as the overall plot, there aren't a lot of surprises. That is, apart from just how cuckoo August really is.

The novel has taken off, and won over many fans, but at the end of the day the film has little to recommend beyond the thoroughly engrossing creation of not only 1931, but the life of circuses themselves during the depression-era economy. The story itself is straight-forward and stale, and hopelessly telegraphed into the bargain, but watching the setting come to life is worth the trouble on its own.

This brings us back around to the magical way in which this is managed. It isn't that Pattinson, or Waltz are particularly believable as characters existing in 1931 (they aren't), and Witherspoon has rarely been believable as anything beyond a flighty airhead. It isn't that the dialog and events overly seem to characterize the time we're after (I'm not convinced they do). It isn't even that the set design and so on really perfects the effort to display the period (a scene at a small grocer in town only looks of 1931 insofar as it appears for the all the world to be a backlot set from 1931).

No, this one goes down to pure movie magic, because somehow it feels like 1931, despite the fact that it's difficult to point to anything that's doing a great job of representing 1931. For those not overly impressed with maudlin drama that ultimately leads to very little, that may be the only sell to the film. The plot comes together decently, but turning out average here is a waste of Waltz, and a book that I'm led to understand has far more to say (anything would be more actually). It's a lazy turn that is more interested in looking pretty than getting somewhere with its story, and that makes it hard to get anywhere with the characters.

Still, there is something to be said for kicking back with anything that knows how to work its visuals, and the circus train itself is not only a character in its own right, it's the best one the thing's got.

Rating: ★★½☆☆ 

The standard DVD release doesn't have a lot to offer in the way of bonus material, and fans of the film are definitely going to want to go for the Blu-Ray edition.

The DVD includes spotlight featurettes for both Pattinson and Witherspoon, and both are probably worthwhile only to their biggest fans, who will take any excuse to gawk at more footage of them. The Traveling Show: From Page to Screen is a decent featurette covering, obviously, the transition from the book to the screenplay, and then the effort to get things to look just so. This is a bonus that would go a lot farther if you were convinced that a decent job was actually managed in the process, but I haven't read the book, so perhaps you were. Either way, it's an above-average look for such a featurette.

You also get an audio commentary with Director Francis Lawrence and Writer Richard LaGravenese. This is a tricky one as far as commentary tracks go, because it's actually pretty interesting, but I don't know how much it will mean to the average fan of the film. It's often technical in focus, and whether or not anyone is interested in Lawrence's views on the film's construction is anyone's guess.

The Blu-Ray offers a much wider assortment of special features (see full list below), including several featurettes that are likely of much more interest than those reserved for the standard format release.

By the time the clock strikes midnight on December 31, 2011, moviegoers will have been subjected to the release of 27 sequels, a record for a single calender year. When you factor in other non-original films such as prequels, remakes, and spin-offs, we reach a grand total of 1 in 5 (that's 20% of) films in 2011 that are some sort of derivative of territory previously explored on the silver screen.

That means that every struggling writer and recent film school graduate, who may be the next Quentin Tarantino or Christopher Nolan waiting in the wings, not to mention already established auteurs looking to push the boundaries of film with avant-garde cinema, will have 1/5 of their opportunities taken away from them by rehashes (and undoubtedly an even larger percentage of the actual money spent on film production). This is a critical mass folks, an epidemic of unoriginality, and if the trend continues, I have to say I'll be pretty indifferent if the Mayan's 2012 End-of-Days prediction turns out to be more than silly superstition.

As a cineaste desperately longing for the days when films were willing to challenge their audiences (the late 1960's and 1970's serving as the prime example), the question arises, can anything be done? In classic free-market economics the answer would be to stop rewarding the studios for making pre-made, frozen, microwave-ready films, i.e. stopping seeing sequels, but while this is all good in theory, it's not very practical.

Film patrons today have become mindless zombies, feeling obligated to see a film just because they saw the others in the series or because there were a lot of commercials for it on television. "McMovies" also do well because they're known quantities that don't require much critical engagement from their audiences (or face the wrath of class-action lawsuits if they do, as Drive recently found out), and while I have no beef with commoditized food (pun fully intended), because as someone once wisely pointed out to me, "All food is future poop", films are art.

Movies are not meant purely for easy digestion to continue simple subsistence. This problem is not one that can simply be pawned off on "stupid Americans" either, because as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides proved this summer, even if a sequel does (relatively) poor in America, it still ends up shattering box office records when you factor in the rest of world (especially if Johnny Depp is the star).

Short of throwing out the whole system and establishing a philosopher king, a la Plato's "Republic", is there any other solution? Yes, or at least Kevin Smith seems to think so. Back in 2007, Smith simultaneously wrote two screenplays and pitched them both to the Weinstein Brothers. One was Zach and Miri Make a Porno, a typical, crude comedy that Kevin Smith has built his career on, and the other was Red State, an atypical horror film inspired by the homophobic Westboro Baptist Church. The Weinsteins accepted the first screenplay, which was released in 2008 and starred Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, but rejected the second, deeming it too bleak to ever find any audience. Undeterred, Smith went on to make Red State on his own, but more interestingly, at an "auction" after the film's premiere at the Sundance film festival, Kevin Smith bought the distribution rights to Red State for $20.

The idea behind Smith distributing his own film was to create a new business model for smaller films. Instead of spending millions of dollars on a marketing budget that has absolutely nothing to do with actually making the movie, Smith figured he could make the film for $4 million, forgo the bloated marketing campaign, and make up for the loss in publicity by personally touring the film around the country in select cities and charging more than the usual cost for a movie ticket. The revenue from these screenings, along with DVD sales, rentals, and merchandise he sold at the shows, would put the film in the black, alleviating the need for big budget green lighting from any major movie studios and thereby establishing a blue print for future films to find an audience without a corporate financier acting as a middle man.

It's a potentially revolutionary idea, and one that Smith claims turned a profit all the way back in April. Although I'm skeptical the model could translate to filmmakers without the dedicated cult fanbase that Smith has cultivated over the years. As I'm sure you've picked up on at this point in the article, I'm extremely sympathetic to the ideas and ideals behind Smith's venture. This is why I desperately wanted to love this film. If Red State proved to be a home run, the possibility of other artists blazing the trail of true independent filmmaking could be endless. An era of films without compromise, spared being diluted to the lowest common denominator in order to satisfy business interest, could begin again.

Sadly though, I can not wholeheartedly endorse Red State, and I'm not pragmatic enough to pretend I loved the film for the sake of the cause either. Most disappointing of all, the film's low budget is one of its major drawbacks. Red State looks and feels like a film not meant for major distribution, and that's not meant as a complement on its rebellious non-conformist spirit. If you go to your local video rental store (if there are any left), you'll notice a plethora of horror films you've likely never heard of, and the reason for this... they're cheap. Even without theatrical release, these films routinely turn a profit, but they usually look like shit, and unfortunately Red State is visually more akin to these B-movies then I would have preferred.

Some of the film's shortcomings go beyond mere monetary issues though and must be chalked up to poor stylistic choices. Like all contemporary horror films, big and small budget, Red State has an extreme affinity for the color gray and all its shades, which is a rather blunt manner of letting us know how grim the situation is. As with its other compatriots in the genre, Red State also uses an abundance of gimmicky camera work, including "shaky cam" and most annoying to me, claustrophobic staging. Horror films in the modern age appear to be singularly focused on delivering hot thrills of stifling asthmatic panic, instead of the cold chills of a decaying and pointless existence explored in earlier ages of the genre, and unfortunately Red State buys into the inferior motif of the former.

In the film's action-oriented sequences, it borrows heavily from the paradigm first established by Steven Spielberg in the famous Omaha Beach landing sequence in Saving Private Ryan: short, staccato movements achieved through slower shutter speeds (as much as I love this scene, I sometimes wonder if it was worth the Pandora's box it opened). For a film with such a unique business model, it's a shame the style of the movie itself is so generic and derivative.

The film's plot centers around a group of three horny teenage boys who unwittingly fall into the trap of the insanely fundamentalist Five Points Church and their leader, Abin Cooper (Michael Parks). The sole focus of the church is to decry and protest the sinful ways of homosexuals and their hedonistic acts, but on this occasion, the church is a bit more proactive. Acting as God's proxy, they see fit becoming judge, jury, and executioner for the three boys whose willingness to participate in group sex is deemed too gay for the Righteous Path. In a bit of dumb luck, a police officer is sent to investigate the premises just as the boys are about to be executed, which ends in the police officer's demise. The death of a law official necessitates the involvement of the ATF, led by Agent Joseph Keenan (John Goodman), who begin a full on assault of the compound very reminiscent of the ATF's siege of the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas.

The outrageous bigotry of the Westboro Bapist Church and people of their ilk is an easy target to pick on, and turning them into bloodthirsty killers feels a bit like piling on, but while the film may lack some tact, it thoroughly captures the atmosphere and stylings of fire and brimstone parishioners. In particular, the film perfectly captures the trance members of religious cults enter during sermons. In fact, Red State works much better as a study of the mindset of religious fundamentalism than it does as the genre exercise it aspires to be.

A huge part of the reason the film succeeds in its portrayal of religious zealots is due to the remarkable performance from veteran character actor Michael Parks. Best known for his collaborations in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez films such as From Dusk Till Dawn, Kill Bill Vol. 1, Kill Bill Vol. 2, and Grindhouse, Parks delivers an outstanding performance as the radical preacher Abin Cooper. Parks mimicry of the inflictions and soft-loud dynamics employed by Southern preachers to enthrall an audience is scarily spot on, and the overall patriarchal attitude of these cultist pastors seems to inhabit Parks' very body. John Goodman , a man I would nominate for the most underappreciated thespian of his generation (in a just world, he would have received award recognition for his powerhouse performances in the Coen Brothers' films, Barton Fink and The Big Lebowski), gives a compelling performance as a weary, conscientious ATF agent, reluctantly towing the company line. These two great performances from two underutilized veteran actors are the primary reason I give Red State as high marks as I do, and are easily the best arguments for why you should see this film.

I dearly wanted to embrace Red State as an outstanding cinematic achievement, but while it has some interesting ideas and laudable goals in reshaping the business of cinema, it did not fully convert me. Smith never really settles on the film he wants to make, and the fact that one of the film's multiple personalities is that of a cheap horror film, does not help matters. Two brilliant performances from a pair of consummate professionals make the film worth watching, but I can't help feeling this was a missed opportunity.

American audiences probably don't get much out of knowing that Submarine is written and directed by Richard Ayoade, and that's a shame in itself. The best chance is via BBC America and/or Netflix streams of The Mighty Boosh, or the brilliant The IT Crowd, but odds are that you haven't heard of him. The real shame of this is that you have no chance of being truly astounded by the depth and pointed genius you'll find here, and there's really nothing like a dumbfounded, "Moss directed this!"

Submarine is a sort of coming-of-age story, but it focuses on Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts), a young man who came of age long ago and is rather trying to find his way back at this point. His parents are an odd mix of liberal thinking and catatonia, and Oliver has run through a wide spectrum of "trying to figure out who he is," at least in part because his parents are giving him little to work with. Worse, his mother's old flame, a self-help, spiritualist... something, has moved in next door, and Oliver fears the worst, apparently with good reason.

Of course, Oliver's real problem (apart from being in High School while simultaneously being decidedly odd) is a girl. Jordana (Yasmin Paige) is his current crush/fixation, and Oliver isn't the sort of lad to go in any direction with a crush other than full-scale, calculated obsession. Jordana is a bit odd herself, impressed apparently with acts of bullying, fire, and minor flights of wanton destruction. Oliver approaches the Jordana problem as we might expect given his state of near-terminal "wise beyond his years-ness," and not only plots various undertakings calculated to appeal to her sensibilities, which he isn't necessarily fond of (like his efforts at a kind of awkward, pseudo-bullying of the fat girl at school), but he also plots plots themselves, as another level of effort to woo her. Not only, as it were, are these the sorts of things I do, but these are the sort of plots I plot.

Wandering what seems a turbulently random sea of life, Oliver schemes toward his dual goals of winning over Jordana (and, well... bedding her, naturally), and keeping his mother from straying. Armed with clear goals, bags of intelligence, and a surprisingly sharp intuition, but none of the wherewithal that comes from life experience, Oliver shoots for his goals with the reckless cluelessness of any other teenager, and finds himself facing similar results. Unfortunately, it seems to turn out that being really clever, and having an adult outlook on life only manages to give you a staggering appreciation of your societal impotence, and a soul-crushing cognizance of just how much you've screwed things up.

This quirky, somber adventure pulls the child out of you, and captures youth, love, and raw emotion in a way few films have ever managed. Better still, it does it all in such a fresh, vibrant way that it spins a kind polar viewing experience that is utterly mesmerizing in its effectiveness. The slowest, most passive scenes, including several involving Oliver's uber-depressed father (worked brilliantly by Noah Taylor), become riveting, and the few fast-paced jaunts of "action," turn into the equivalent of the reflective moments which we're accustomed to being the "slow down" scenes.

The only rub to come from this fun and exceedingly incisive jaunt through youth is that it is hard to imagine that Richard Ayoade is on the verge of the opportunities he to be as a result. The fullest measure of writing talent can't quite be given over to him, because it's based Joe Dunthorne's winning novel, but in terms of the ability of translation and direction, the brilliant, instant-classic efforts we aren't in store for in the near future is nothing short of tragic.

Submarine takes you on a wild ride that so well embodies the furious effort toward nothing that is youth, and more importantly youth today, that it is hard to imagine that virtually everyone will not see themselves in Oliver, despite the utterly outlandish portrayal of his particular highs, lows, and windmill tilting. For all that he brings forward the most logical-seeming (if only to him) plans, and even given his philosophic insights and psychiatric acumen, Oliver somehow cannot find a way around meeting the harsh realization that no one is flying this bloody plane.

Well..., that's something like how he sees it anyway.

BBC's The Hour, also seen on BBC America, is one of the most gripping series to come along in recent memory. Set in 1956, the story is about a team working at the BBC to put together a new news program, The Hour. Freddie Lyon (Ben Whishaw) has worked at the BBC for some time, and has mostly made a name for himself as a renegade few people are particularly interested in working with. When the new show begins to form, his best friend, the gorgeous Bel Rowley (Romola Garai) gets the producing nod.

You'd think it was the perfect fit, but Freddie and Bel have a sort of love/hate relationship, and his penchant for wild antics isn't outrageously helpful to Bel, who has to prove herself capable in a job not often offered to women. Not only is Freddie apt to push the boundaries, but having Bel as his boss is liable to lead him to take even more liberties.

On the agenda for the six-episode story are: the Suez canal situation and the British government's involvement in The Hour not saying anything negative about it, the death of two of Freddie's friends by extremely strange circumstances, possibly involving the fact that they may or may not have been spies, and the love triangle between Freddie, Bel, and the face of The Hour, Hector Madden (Dominic West), who is married, but nevertheless hell bent on seducing Bel.

While certain elements come off a bit stagy (a certain chase-ish scene resulting a death, as one example), the overall production is remarkable, and delivers more honest drama than you're likely to find on television without the most exhaustive of searches. With virtually nothing to go on, and no particular skills, Freddie digs for the truth about what happened to his lifelong friend simply by poking incessantly until something has to give.

What stands out most about the show is that it is not simply dedicated to the tension and suspense of a show filled with spies and government conspiracy, but houses all this within the greater construct of the people working to put out a news program during the fairly early days of television. There are strange clues, mysterious events, and shadowy characters, but it's still an office, most people know nothing of what's happening, and life goes on.

Too much cannot be said for the writing, which is sharper and put together better than the vast majority of programming, fitting all the fun, drama, and intrigue of most 20+ episode series into six episodes. But, the actors sell it all so well that it couldn't have had the same punch without them. Ben Whishaw creates the perfect combination of everyman and determined, intelligent, obnoxious newshound. The ability level is the same throughout the cast, something that is rare in this day and age, and that includes the furthest reaches of the supporting cast. Burn Gorman (who some may remember from Torchwood) is especially good as the "man with no facial expressions," who delivers an incredible chill whenever he shows his face.

Put together obviously with a different take on entertaining, the show clearly takes notes from some of the classic shows from the time period it portrays, teasing and pulling the audience in a way that is all but abandoned now. You'll be lucky to avoid watching all six episodes back-to-back, and you might want to bear that in mind before you begin.

The final nail is perhaps just a bit anti-climactic, but the ride getting there is of instant classic status. It's the most fun I've had watching television in several years.

The Blu-Ray offers up superb video quality, though this is perhaps not something that really showcases the possibilities of Blu-Ray. It makes for an interesting meld actually, as we have a show that is trying to put out the look and feel of early television and a bygone era, and we can watch it in stunning HD. There are several key points where you will appreciate the ability, especially when it comes to a few shadowy scenes, but overall the massive detail is not quite the thing here.

A couple of bonus featurettes are included: Creating The Hour, a look at the set design, which is actually far more interesting than one might expect, and a pretty standard Behind-the-Scene effort. Though not absolutely anything that necessarily appeals to fans of the show, the set design featurette is well worth watching, because getting the mid-50s to come through is a trickier affair than you think.

Does it seem like five years? For some it may seem like Blu-Rays just turned up, and others may surely feel like it's been a lot longer (some may even wish it were so given the size of their collection), but Blu-Ray has turned five. To celebrate, the BFCA coordinated with the Blu-Ray Disc Association to develop a Critics' Choice list of the top five titles from the first five years of Blu-Ray Disc.

Take a look below. Keep in mind, the voting was not based on absolutely every release over the last five years, but rather was among those titles that studios decided to put forward as those they believed were their best efforts.

Since its introduction in mid-2006, more than 100 million Blu-ray players and more than 300 million discs have been sold worldwide. The format has brought films ranging from Hollywood classics to the latest blockbusters to living rooms across the globe in high definition. Members of the BFCA were given 32 Blu-ray Disc titles to consider. The titles selected as Critics' Choice were chosen based not on box office or retail success, but rather, on the treatment and presentation of the film on Blu-ray Disc.

"The BFCA is proud to participate in this milestone anniversary in the history of the Blu-ray disc format," noted BFCA president Joey Berlin. "This voting process enabling our members to use their critical prowess to alert the viewing public to a wide spectrum of motion picture achievement enhanced through the prism of this exciting technology."

Criteria for evaluating and selecting the top five titles included:

• High definition picture quality
• Audio quality
• Use of Blu-ray's capacity and technical capabilities to create compelling bonus features, whether interactive, internet connected or otherwise
• Overall artistic/aesthetic merit of the film
• Special treatment of the title (restoration of the original film, special edition packaging, etc.) believed to make the presentation and experience of the film on Blu-ray Disc extraordinary

Chuggington was an instant smash success in my household, and the trains have been taking over ever since they first showed up. There's a new DVD out, It's Training Time, and I wanted to give you an opportunity to win yours here.

Prom is one of those films that comes along every once in a while with the general purpose of proving yet again that John Hughes was (not counting anything after 1990) a God, and moreover that the "era" spanning roughly 1986-1994 was perhaps the greatest time to grow up in all of history.

As a High School effort, focusing on a lot of angst, relationship woes, rebels, and a philosophic geek who can't get a date, you'd lean toward only the John Hughes reference, but the film features a star (Thomas McDonell) giving a circa-early-90s Johnny Depp impression, and it's best effort at song is a cover of a song by The Cranberries.

The upshot is that, while we need to create new material for those who aren't going to revisit "oldies," we're exceedingly aware that teen angst entertainment has been perfected, and the only move now is to recreate and redistribute it, knowing also that we have little hope of delivering.

That said, Prom, for all that it was not met with much critical acclaim, is a pretty solid exercise, and despite the fact that the characters don't flesh out as well as we'd like (very possibly because of the limitations inherent in Disney productions), the film gives us something to latch onto, wildly stereotypical though it all may be.

Our story, obviously, revolves around Prom and the preparation for same. Nova (Aimee Teegarden) is in charge of planning the festivities, but when the decorations go up in smoke, the future of Prom is in question. With few options for getting things done in time for the big day, Nova finds herself saddled with rebel Jesse (McDonell), who is given the task of helping make sure everything comes together as punishment... basically for generally not fitting in.

Meanwhile, a cacophony of side stories develop which aim at tackling every High School role and possibility under the sun, some to interesting turns, most not so much. The darling couple of the school are on the outs, largely because the BMOC has a wandering eye, and his eye wanders toward a very cute girl who is on the radar of a certain "nerd," who knows she is out of his league. This eventually leads to the nerd duo who are temporarily on the outs, because the one nerd gets a date and blows off his friend.

We also get a look at Lloyd (proving again that Lloyd is always the coolest cat in any teen angst film), a senior who can't get a date to prom despite the most convoluted efforts at asking virtually every girl in school. He also winds up with the coolest girl to appear in the film, because that's how these things work out.

Thus, it's basically every teen angst angle rolled into one, but it chugs along at a good clip. Best of all, it doesn't take itself too seriously, knows it hasn't got what it takes to make a real stand in the genre, and just goes for being a bit of fun. That's a far more positive endorsement than it sounds, because while it doesn't go especially right, it doesn't really go far wrong either. For the right demographic it works well, even if it lands a tad on the side of candy floss.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ 

The home release isn't exactly loaded, but it has some decent offerings. The DVD only release gets you a Making Of featurette, which, for this sort of film, only amounts to so much. Frankly, there probably wasn't much to wonder about when it comes to the making of the film, so the effort here is just an excuse to get a bit more footage with the stars. You also get a short blooper reel, which isn't bad, but doesn't go very far.

The Blu-Ray offers those bonuses, seven music videos, deleted scenes, and Last Chance Lloyd, a rundown on all the ways Lloyd asked girls out, including several not featured in the film. This is actually a pretty cool bonus, for what it's worth, and an interesting spin on how to deliver additional content.

As I'm sure everyone knows, Top Gear made the trip across the pond, and as much as it may seem odd to say, given the nature of the beast, it's one of the better efforts at taking a show from The UK and "Americanizing" it. Fans of the original took to the show immediately, and new recruits found something to love.

There is something unique and special about the variety found in the show, and every episode takes viewers on a wild ride, but you're never sure exactly what you're going to get.

It was certainly a tricky move, considering the fanbase the original show has built over the years, and nothing could be more important than the selection of hosts. Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust, and Rutledge Wood seem to have come together to form the perfect group, combining the fun, knowledge, and atmosphere of the original surprisingly well.

The challenges and stunts featured in the first season are going to be hard to top. In fact, some of them are downright unbelievable, and even getting a description of what's coming can't begin to let you know what's coming your way. I might give you some hints at the effort to evade a helicopter in Dodge Viper, through town, but it won't mean much until you see it. Of course, The Stig is around as well.

The truth is, I was very surprised the show came together as nicely as it did. It gives you the best parts of the original show, adds a definite American feel to things, and overall leaves well enough alone. That's not what you're led to expect from such efforts, and the fun and excitement of guys obsessed with cars comes through to make something so watchable it's hard to believe.

The season also featured some very cool guests, including: Ty Burrell (who was absolutely brilliant), Tony Hawk, and Michelle Rodriguez.

The truth is, Top Gear is tough to explain. The idea of a car show filled with adrenaline, insane stunts, car reviews, and showcases of some of the world's most incredible cars doesn't really give you any idea of the show itself. Frankly, I'm not even particularly interested in cars, but this is a show I look forward to more than most.

The DVD release doesn't have a lot of special features, but if you know the show, you know that it doesn't really need them, and it's tricky to imagine what they might be. You do get audio commentary, which serious fans will love, but oddly doesn't amount to all that much. You also get the show's "webisodes," which is convenient, and these are filled with great stuff. Finally, there's a poolside chat with the guys.

This is a DVD release that is incredibly easy to recommend, because if you don't want it, you really ought to be picking it up for someone.

The sixth series of the new Doctor Who has pulled out all the stops in the continuing effort to hold onto the success David Tennant brought to the franchise. Matt Smith seems to have won over fans (by and large), but the show clearly aims at raising the bar, instilling as much drama as possible, and working the long arc as much as possible.

It's hard to imagine boring straight to the heart of series fireworks with more gusto than having The Doctor die in the first episode of the season, but you can't say the show didn't give it a go.

The Series Six - Part One Blu-Ray gives you the first seven episodes, and it is a surprisingly packed set of adventures indeed. The season kicks off with "The Impossible Astronaut," which is a mind-bending episode even without the eventual demise the sent shockwaves through cyberspace. A trip to the Utah desert, a Who masterpiece of a baddie, and a jaunt over to the oval office, and it all leads to a young girl bizarrely trapped in a NASA spacesuit.

We also find The Doctor aboard a pirate ship, trying to keep people from falling victim to a siren, and on a desolate junkyard of a planet somewhere (somehow) outside the universe, in a brilliant episode written by Neil Gaiman. Another two-parter finds our heroes battling living flesh, a strange substance used to create copies of people, that would like to register a complaint about its work conditions.

It all comes together, what with Amy's strange visions of an eye-patched woman staring at her, into a battle of epic proportions, and a revelation that threw fans for a loop they are still reeling from, and has put everyone on edge waiting for the season to continue.

Overall, the sixth series has thus far put the show into a sprint (continuing the trajectory we've been on with the rebirth of the franchise), whereas the "old" Doctor generally sauntered along. The new series has had its moments that gave us a real feeling of the personality that (one assumes) is meant to persist throughout, and Gaiman's episode is a good example, but with the sixth series, events do not particularly allow for a mild-mannered approach, nor for the somewhat lackadaisical, absent-minded Doctor that long-term fans have come to love.

The most telling thing about the series is the new opening, which makes things into Amy's story, rather than something outright Doctor in terms of its existence. No mere "companion," Amy is the person leading you into the show, by telling you of her encounters with the man, who is clearly at the center, but no longer the "thing in itself."

I've been watching Doctor Who since it was first on PBS, and while I love what Tennant did with the series and character, there is something about Smith that gets at the heart of The Doctor, even despite the rather un-Doctor-esque demands of the storylines here. Moreover, the episodes are as fun, clever, and exciting as anything to come from the new world of Doctor Who, especially packed into only seven episodes.

The release also includes two "Monster Files," which give you an examination of The Silence and The Gangers. There isn't a great deal to these, but they are rather interesting in what they give. The Gangers may not actually deserve quite as much attention, but The Silence made for great episodes, wild spins, and let's face it, some interesting acting... and, they're creepy.

I'm not a big fan of the half-season releases that have become all the rage, but this one is well worth the investment. I would normally say that this is the perfect thing to pick up so that you can catch up before the season continues, but this is a series that is absolutely worth watching again before the season continues as well.

Of course, the Blu-Ray looks fantastic, doing justice to the shadowy depths The Silence hides in, and the subdued pirate ship and junk planet, but also putting forward the panoramas of the Utah desert. That's hardly surprising though. TV shows don't usually get a great deal of praise for how they look, but Doctor Who makes (apparently) a serious effort in bringing things together as though it were on par with a film, and it shows up here brilliantly.

Doctor Who: Series 6, Part 1, a two-disc DVD and Blu-ray set, contains the first seven episodes along with two Monster files, “The Gangers” and “The Silence,” two of the Doctor’s most challenging opponents.

In the season opener, “The Impossible Astronaut,” four envelopes are received, numbered 2, 3 and 4, each containing a date, time and map reference, unsigned, but in TARDIS blue. Who sent them? And who received the missing number one? This strange summons reunites the Doctor (Smith), Amy (Gillan), Rory (Darvill) and River Song (Kingston) in the middle of the Utah desert and unveils a terrible secret the Doctor's friends must never reveal to him. ‘Space 1969’ is their only clue, as their quest lands them - quite literally - in the Oval Office, where they are enlisted by President Nixon himself to assist enigmatic former-FBI agent Canton (Mark Sheppard) in saving a terrified little girl from a mysterious spaceman.

Following the two-parter, the Doctor, Amy and Rory journey on the high seas of 1696 aboard Avery’s (Bonneville) pirate ship to solve the mystery of the Siren (Cole). In a bubble universe at the very edge of reality, the Doctor meets an old friend with a new face, and in a monastery on a remote island in the near future, an industrial accident takes on a terrible human shape. And waiting for them, at the end of all this, is the battle of Demon's Run, and the Doctor's darkest hour. Can even the truth about River Song save the Time Lord's soul? Only two things are certain. This may turn out to be rather heavy on the spoilers by the time I'm done. I'm not sure though. I haven't decided. You've been warned.

The best thing about Philip K. Dick is not that he's a great writer, put together volumes of wildly creative stories, or anything else often associated with his name. No, what was really brilliant about him was that he knew what science-fiction was for. Perhaps an odd thing to say, but as the genre (especially if we include fantasy) expands, it becomes more and more clear that few do.

Luckily (because Adjustment Team is a short story, and ultimately only tangentially related to the film's final product), the same is true of George Nolfi, the writer and directer of The Adjustment Bureau. It's purpose, rather than simply having ray guns in your action sequences, is to talk about real life better, by talking about the unreal. To showcase the inner workings of regular life, and zero in on them.

In this case, the focus is on free will, a subject that has stymied most people's efforts to discuss it since the first person came up with the term. Of course, there are a few different sides of this coin being mulled over, and not merely the general idea of whether we have it or not, but also what it really means to thwart the will of others, and when, if ever, we have the right to make decisions for others when it is in their best interest. Heady stuff for a film with a trailer that shows a lot of running.

As we enter the film, David Norris (Matt Damon) is just about to lose the election for New York Senator (as a result of his making stupid choices). Faced with this crushing reality, he goes to the public hotel bathroom to spend a good deal of time working up the nerve to give a concession speech. Against all odds, he meets a woman named Elise (Emily Blunt), who was hiding from hotel security, because she crashed a wedding. The two strike up a conversation, and are instantly attracted to each other. Of course, this is not a situation that is likely to come to much, and she soon dashes off, still being pursued by security.

As a result of this chance meeting (perhaps), David returns to the concession speech he was about to give, and delivers a spontaneous attack on the entire system of running for office, which naturally makes him the immediate, and nearly unbeatable front-runner for the next election.

Before things even really get started for David, we are introduced to some strange men wearing '30s era suits and hats, who seem to be following him. They speak forebodingly about the world, and the things they may or may not be doing, and generally act creepy and menacing. One of them warns another that David must spill coffee on his shirt by an exact time, and we're clued in to the fact that some seriously odd things are afoot.

The coffee appointment doesn't come to pass, which leads not only to David running into Elise again, but also to David showing up at work before he was supposed to, and he finds these odd-suited men doing some very strange things indeed. It turns out that these men are "Adjusters," and they are charged with making sure everything goes according to "the plan." Said plan, the work of The Chairman, who is obviously at the head of the adjustment bureau, is how things are supposed to work out, and the actual world sometimes needs a nudge in order to keep things moving in the right direction.

Generally, these adjustments are the sort of things no one would ever notice. Someone spills coffee on David's shirt, and when he goes home to change, he doesn't meet Elise again, doesn't show up to work on time, and no one has any reason to think that strings are being pulled. Unfortunately, more drastic measures are sometimes needed, which is why a crew were in David's office pointing glowing sticks at people's brains.

David has seen them now, and we naturally need some action. Captured by the adjusters, David is given a quick run down on how things really work, and is told that he can never reveal them to anyone, or see Elise again, and if he doesn't do as he's told, they'll just erase his mind.

Eventually, they do happen upon each other again, David having actually never given up the impossible search, and though the time they've actually spent together is almost implausibly brief, they find that they are hopelessly drawn to each other. The plan, however, is still the plan, and the adjusters try a different tactic with David this time around, they let him in on the future.

Elise is a dancer, and the adjusters give David a shot at choosing the plan. If he doesn't see her again, they tell him, he will go on to win several more elections, not just for Senator, and she will become one of the most famous dancers in the world. If they stay together, she will end up teaching six year-olds. David lets her go.

There is ultimately more in store for you, as the pair meet again and the chase is on to try and outdo the adjusters, but it is at this point that the film has actually done its job. In a fantastically fun and entertaining effort, the free will question has now been thrown at you several different ways, and all without really saying anything. If you're given a choice, the adjusters can "see" how you will decide, which is how they are so good at tweaking events. They can read the causal chain standing in front of them to such a degree that they know what you will do. Where's the free will in that?

Moreover, The Chairman has decided that, at this point in history anyway, people don't have free will. At least, not in the big picture. Things are going to be decided for us, and if we can't nudge you enough, we'll just alter your mind until that's the choice you'll make anyway. Now, David has his own run at life's greatest question. The Chairman, after all, is just making decisions that alter the way our lives will work out based on what he decides is in our own best interests. Is that wrong? Why doesn't it seem wrong when David decides what life is best for Elise?

There are no answers in The Adjustment Bureau, not because it's only questions that are actually interesting, but because, as in life, there aren't really any questions either. Things just happen, and you are left to do with them what you will. There are a lot of great things you can say about the film in the usual, technical categories, but they lose their importance in a magnificent way here. Damon and Blunt are wonderful. The crisp pace is well-designed, and the overall presentation is put together better than the vast majority of efforts you run into. In this case, the ability to revel in these things is trumped by the fact that they only serve to create an enjoyable and entertaining expression of thought.

The best thing you can say about the film is that it understands films in the way Philip K. Dick understood science-fiction, but no one really cares about that, and it certainly doesn't have its own award. It is a film that dares to believe that there are people interested in yarns about the complexities of life. It is also one that not only doesn't care to do anything beyond vaguely wondering at you, but has no great interest in your response, or potential lack thereof. Moving ultimately over the final hurdle toward brilliance, it's so slick, engaging, and filled with energy, that it's questions don't need to be tackled in order to fall in love with it.

In the end, in the midst of all the mind-control, "adjusting," and sci-fi schemes, there is an entire universe in the moment when David decides to make choices that change more than his life alone, and there's nothing otherworldly about it. We do it everyday.

Blu-Ray Features

There are quite a few bonuses you get with the release, some more interesting than others, but it makes for quite a package. There are several deleted scenes, none of which are exactly fascinating, and they aren't the sort of things that would change anything. There are several featurettes, most of the usual sort.

The Labyrinth of Doors: Interactive Map of New York jumps you around through various locations of the film, and gives you some of the filming effort at each place. You've got behind-the-scenes footage, and general showcasing of the scenes. It's a fun enough little bonus, and altogether gives you some 30 minutes of video, but it only goes so far.

Destined to Be is a very quick run through of the film, which is actually a more unusual bonus. It's hard to say how much viewers will enjoy this quick jaunt through the film's story, but it's put together well.

A couple of others walk you through shooting in New York generally, and Emily Blunt's dance training. They are both only a few minutes long, and are at best fluffy bits of fun.

There is also a commentary track by writer/director Nolfi, and it's easily the best bonus you're getting. It sticks to form for the most part, but he gives an interesting take on many aspects of the film, including what is and isn't shown, and why.

Unbelievably, Hey Dude, Nickelodeon's teen-focused, dude ranch extravaganza, started airing in 1989. That isn't unbelievable because of how long ago it was, but because I find it hard to imagine I was actually that old when it came out.

The misadventures of the Bar None Ranch was the first original, live-action program on the network. Though it didn't last an especially long time in first runs, it lived on for quite a while on the network, and paved the way for more original shows by the network that soon followed - Welcome Freshmen, Clarissa Explains It All, Salute Your Shorts, Doug, Rugrats, and many others.

Thus, odd as it may sound, the show has its place in TV history, and is pretty legitimately the forefather of the teen market of shows now ruled by such treasures as iCarly.

The show opened with the return to summer employment at the ranch, with veterans Ted (David Lascher), Danny (Joe Torres), and Melody (Christine Taylor), finding themselves faced with not only new ranch hand Bradley (Kelly Brown), but a new owner as well.

Ben Ernst (David Brisbin), straight out of the general mindset of City Slickers, bought the ranch and moved from New York to show his son, Buddy (Josh Tygiel), a different kind of life. Naturally, Mr. Ernst knows little about running a ranch, life in the southern Arizona desert, or much of anything having to do with being away from a big city, and from there springs forth much of the show's antics.

Not to be outdone, self-centered, but lovable Ted manages to get into his own trouble with great regularity, often as a result of chasing after Bradley, the rich girl who wants to work on the ranch to prove that she can.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Melody and Danny serve mostly as points of stability and/or comic foils, though they get their own licks in occasionally, such as the episode that finds Melody running rampant with practical jokes.

The first season builds things nicely, with personality clashes soon falling by the wayside, and outside influences causing the disturbances (money woes, another rich girl from Brad's home life making an appearance, even a thief at the ranch). Though the production quality seems amazingly low by today's standards, the show holds up for the right demographic. My ten year-old son loved it.

The DVD release isn't particularly slick, though effort toward polishing the video would obviously be in vain, but it does have an interesting bonus feature, a new interview with Christine Taylor. It isn't overly long, but she gives an interesting recount of how she ended up on the show (she originally auditioned to be Brad), and she reminisces about the behind-the-scenes antics.

While it lacks the flash of today's standards, I definitely recommend picking this one up. It's more clever than it seems, and silly or no, it draws in audiences. It's family-friendly that's really a lot of fun, and kids today will love it as much as people (somewhat younger than I) did when it first aired.

By the way, this is a somewhat timely venture, as TeenNick is about to kick off a programming block called The '90s Are All That, which I don't think is featuring this show, but will offer up the return of several others mentioned here, and other Nickelodeon hits from the decade.

The latest Ultimate Edition releases for the Harry Potter franchise are out, and while I have been a big fan of these releases from the beginning, they may have moved into the category of "strictly for die-hards" at this point. The Order of the Phoenix Ultimate Edition boasts "Over One Hour" of never-before-seen bonus content, which is already at the bare minimum, I think, of really selling fans on the idea that there is enough to make it worth another version of a film, but unless there is something I've missed, the only new bonus is the Ultimate Edition continuation of the Creating the World of Harry Potter series. Which means that there isn't really any new bonus content that is specific to this film.

This year's go at the series is Evolution, and focuses on the journey and transformation of Harry Potter. As usual, these are actually fantastic bonus features, and this one runs about an hour, just like the previous installments. You get snapshots from all the films of the series, with a variety of talking points, this time exploring how things have changed for Harry, and how he has changed to meet new challenges. Of course, it would be hard to avoid also talking about how Radcliffe changed, and similar point of managing the production across so many films. As usual, it's pretty impressive how this comes together, and the series is, I'm sure, a hit with fans, and this one will be no different.

Of course, there is a lot more in the box, as fans are well aware. The release comes with a 44-page book of images from years 1-7 in the franchise, and as such things go, this is a pretty nice offering. It's a mix of a variety of subjects, and in its own way serves to showcase the Evolution of the world to a certain degree. You also get two more of the character cards that have come in all these packages.

The question is, is there really that much more in store for you than with the previous Blu-Ray release of the film? That answer is going to depend on the buyer, but the fairly objective look seems to suggest that there isn't really. For the most serious of fans, this is a no-brainer, and the book, character cards, and bonus Evolution have some real value, but the must-own status may be as much a result of the simple fact that any next thing that comes out is must-own, as opposed to anything about this release that really sells.

There is a certain disparity, and perhaps it is something that is hard to avoid considering the timeliness of the initial release of this film, between the first releases in this series and these latest ones. When the Ultimate Edition of the first few films came out, they really were no-brainers. The extras, and plain old massive shininess of the Ultimate Editions made that DVD sitting on your shelf hide its head in shame. These don't quite set themselves apart to anything like the same degree.

You get the bonuses from the initial release, and there you have a fine assortment of extras. All in all, those bonuses add up to a couple of hours or so, and offer a nice variety. You have the "In-Movie Experience" talking points that play while you watch the movie. This is a nice effort, and gives you a mix of behind-the-scenes investigations into certain scenes and the production in general, as well as explorations of various locales, etc.

You also have the same featurettes from the original release - a general behind-the-scenes effort, one focused on sets and set design, one with a focus on editing, and several others. There are also several deleted scenes, trailers, and the usual odds and ends. Again, this is all the same stuff as the original Blu-Ray release.

Of course, this is all just to take a hard look at the thing. If you happen not to already own the Blu-Ray, it's beyond obvious that this is the one to choose. And, if you're looking to make a Potter fan happy, it would be hard to imagine not going for this release as well. If you've seen the other Ultimate Edition releases, you know that they are exceedingly nice packages, and generally they aren't going to disappoint. Evolution is not really the very best of the Creating the World of Harry Potter series, but these are all very nice productions. Some may simply be a little disappointed that there isn't a bit more that adds to Order of the Phoenix itself.

This stands out a bit, because there is so much that we might have taken a look back at now, given that David Yates comes on board here as director, and this is the point at which things become decidedly darker and more serious, both in the franchise generally, and in the films. The objective judge wants to deduct some points for missing out on the opportunity to put one or two film-specific treatments into the new set, but the overall score remains very high.

ABC Studios is coming out with a slew of television DVD releases once fall approaches, and the pack of offerings run the complete gamut of reaction possibilities. From your favorite shows, to television's biggest "oh my God, that's still on" titles, to "Woops, there goes that show," it's all coming for your viewing and owning pleasure.

Of course, all of these shows have their fans, and ABC has put together nice packages on their previous releases, and these are no different.

Whether you love or hate the shows, they are at least upping the game a bit on DVD release bonus features. I suppose it's becoming mandatory as audiences demand it, and DVD sales (apparently) are slipping in general, but I find that TV shows feel like they are lacking without them even more than films. Something about the long-term investment, fan status, and apparent ease of creation, I suppose.

DVD buyers are certainly varied in their tastes, and their reason for purchase, but if I'm looking to own a TV show, I really start to weigh options if there aren't a fair amount of special features.

At any rate, a few of these are major winners, and you might want to make a note of the dates that you'll be able to pick up such must-owns as Castle, Army Wives, and (I'm as surprised as you) Cougar Town. As far as the rest are concerned, well, you love these shows... and that's OK.

Nine ABC Studios TV series are coming to DVD this fall in complete series sets! The Secret Life of the American Teenager has proven itself a winner, not only because the ABC Family show has held strong numbers, but because it has molded itself into a fun and engaging series that moves beyond simply the hook of its title shtick, and it has continued to do so for several seasons now.

ABC Family keeps surprising me with shows (and, sure, I'm not really in the demographic) that manage to offer up real entertainment for its target market, without losing themselves to screwball drama, and without talking down to anyone. What's really surprising about that, beyond the fact that most things aimed at teens, or tweens, or whoever, seem largely to make the claim that they are fairly stupid, is that they manage this undeniable charm from starting points that seem so ridiculous (well, to me).

You don't really have to be as close to the assumed audience of a show that throws this title right in your face to actually appreciate it, and the effort of writing (all things considered) is beyond what most anyone coming into the show is likely to hope for.

The third season has seen some wild swings, which I suppose is to be expected given the audience and general nature of the beast, but it is all still tempered by a decidedly real take on, if not the reality of teen life, than at least the perceived reality of teen life. Not only a show well worth watching, I can appreciate the draw of watching it again, and you'd really never expect me to say that.

The Volume Six release includes the third season's first 12 episodes.

I have a great giveaway for you today, and I want to get it out to you as soon as possible, which means I'm pushing it out a bit before I get to a full-blown review of the release. The Company Men, despite good review, and a great cast, has nevertheless flown a bit under the radar.

It's an absolutely great film, but is somehow a little too slow and/or not quite big and bad enough to have gotten the traction it deserves. Whatever the reason, this isn't quite the film everyone is talking about, and it should be.

An interesting commentary on, and keen observation of, life in America, the film walks along with a man who thought he had it all, only to be downsized right out of his entire self-concept. With great performances, and sharp writing, this is a movie that will hook you from start to finish.

In THE COMPANY MEN, Bobby Walker ( Ben Affleck) is living the American Dream, until he is stunned to find himself the latest casualty of corporate downsizing. Suddenly, Bobby – along with his co-workers Phil Woodward (Chris Cooper) and Gene McClary (Tommy Lee Jones) – is forced to re-evaluate his self-worth as a husband, as a father, and as a man. For as long as he can remember, he’s given his life to his job. Now, with only the love of his wife and family, it’s time to take his life back.
