- Ponyo [Blu-ray]19 March 2010, 4:26 pm
Though he has been working as a director in Japan since the 1970s, it is only really within the last 10 years that American audiences have been exposed to the incredible works of Hayao Miyazaki. His latest, Ponyo, an original story inspired by The Little Mermaid, hardly breaks the Japanese artist’s run of success. While not quite on the level of masterpieces such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, it is a beautiful tale of childhood innocence and wonder that viewers of all ages can enjoy....
- The Runaways19 March 2010, 4:14 pm
Those of you with a Twilight astigmatism won’t like reading this, but here it is anyway: Kristen Stewart gives the kind of performance in The Runaways that hasn’t been seen on screen since the days of James Dean. The Runaways is her Rebel Without a Cause and what’s more that disaffected, rebellious persona seems to be one which, as it did with Dean, carries over into her real life....

- VOTD: Kuky Returns Trailer19 March 2010, 4:46 pm
We've seen some great animation in the recent past, but damn. The Czech film Kuky Returns looks like a wonderful blend of Spike Jonze, Jan Svankmajer, the Muppets and probably a couple others. (Such as the video game Little Big Planet, even.) But despite all those influences at play, it also looks very much like its own thing. Watch the fantastic trailer after the break. Twitch points to the trailer, and provides the synopsis below. The dialogue is not in English, nor is it subtitled, but I ho...
- Adele Blanc Sec Movie Trailer19 March 2010, 4:14 pm
I won't make any bones about it - I think this first full trailer for Luc Besson's The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc Sec looks simply superb. I've embedded the trailer below the break and fully recommend you check it out. Meanwhile, the film's offical English language web site has launched. A lot of it is still "coming soon", but you can check out the a synopsis and some character art from the original Jacques Tardi comics. The synopsis is housed as part of a virtual newspaper which ...
- Spike Jonze’s Short Film I’m Here Is Now Online In Its Entirety19 March 2010, 3:06 pm
After a premiere at Sundance and several themed screenings around the UK, Spike Jonze' roboromance I'm Here has now arrived online for viewing in its bittersweet entirety. You'll have to set aside 30 minutes for this one, so sneaking a peek in the office while the boss isn't looking might prove a little harder than with Ow! Charlie Bit Me or David After Dentist. Unfortunately, the film's sponsor/financier Absolut is strictly limiting the amount of screenings per day. As we checked, there were 7...
- The Switch Movie Trailer: An Artificial Insemination Romantic Comedy19 March 2010, 2:00 pm
Miramax has released the movie trailer for The Switch, the romantic comedy formerly titled The Baster. The film was originally titled after the film's central maguffin, a turkey baster used for artificial insemination, but test audiences hated it. The script by Allan Loeb landed on the 2008 Black List (a listing of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood). The story follows a woman who finds out she may have conceived with the 'help' of a different man to the one intended. Here is the o...
- Christoph Waltz to Direct German Romantic Comedy19 March 2010, 1:12 pm
Christoph Waltz may have earned worldwide fame thanks to his portrayal of Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds, leading to a flood of possible work in the United States, but he isn't leaving the European film industry behind. Waltz will direct a romantic comedy in Germany, based on a script he's been working on for some time. THR says Waltz will make Auf Und Davon (Up and Away) from his own script, which is loosely based on Meike Winnemuth and Peter Praschl's novel of the same name. This wouldn't...
- 300 Producer and Oscar-winning Screenwriter Adapting Right Stuff, Wrong Sex19 March 2010, 10:00 am

Ward (The Sting, Sleepless in Seatle) to develop a feature film about the secret women's space program, based on Margaret A. Weitekamp's book Right Stuff, Wrong Sex: America's First Women in Space Program (Gender Relations in the American Experience). I've always been interested in stories about the space program, and the Woman in Space program is ripe for the big screen. The official description from the ...

- Jennifer Lopez to Star in Overboard Remake19 March 2010, 8:32 am
The bad news is that Columbia Pictures is remaking the 1987 Gary Marshall film Overboard, produced by Will Smith. The even worse news is that Jennifer Lopez is in talks to star in said remake. I wouldn't be surprised if Smith has a new take on the story which transplants the film in China. Oh wait, no, that was The Karate Kid (and that worked out great... oh, it didn't?). And did I mention that the few people I talked to that attended the screening of The Back-up Plan at ShoWest all told me they...
- Platinum Dunes Producing Remake of The Monster Squad19 March 2010, 3:37 am
Fred Dekker's 1987 movie The Monster Squad, written by Dekker and Shane Black, is a film that couldn't be made today. Not because it was groundbreaking, but because it has a blend of enthusiastic naivite, fun effects, and young actors that don't look like they were cloned from the same attractive DNA and grown in a vat hidden in Santa Monica. Which means, of course, that a remake is happening. Almost two years ago Rob Cohen, who produced the original, mentioned that the rights to the film were ...
- Warner Bros Hopes To Fill Harry Potter’s Void with DC Comics Movie Adaptations19 March 2010, 2:34 am
One of the other notable things Warner Bros head Alan Horn said at the ShoWest presentation today involved how the studio hopes to fill the void that will be left by the studio's most successful franchise. After Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II hits theaters in July 2011, that will conclude the biggest box office franchise in cinema history. How does Warner Bros hope to fill the hole left by this profitable series? Here is the quote from Horn: "As we ease out of Harry Potter, we ...

- Christian Alvart on Captain Future16 March 2010, 11:17 pm
If I'm being honest I have no idea who Captain Future is, but I do know who Christian Alvart is, and although I've been disappointed with his move to Hollywood so far and eagerly await seeing his second (or technically first) Hollywood film, I still have hope for him delivering something as special as his first, Antikörper (Antibodies - Filmstalker review). So with his talk of his latest venture, Captain Future, I feel the hope and expectation rising, and that's despite knowing little about the... - Avatar on Blu-ray to multi-dip?16 March 2010, 11:16 pm
It looks like my usual words of advice will be appearing on the first release of a big film on Blu-ray, wait. I say that again for the Avatar (Filmstalker review) release, for the biggest film comes to Blu-ray with nothing more than the cinematic release. Actually let's correct that, less than the cinematic release, for it's not even going to be in the special James Cameron 3D....Visit Filmstalker for the full story. Unsurprisingly from the studio that brought us vampires and werewolves from the Twilight franchise are heading off for witches next, and what has the saving grace here that Timur Bekmambetov is the man looking like he'll be directing. Without that name I'd be thinking that we're going to be looking at something that's just going to leap on the PG13 audience and cater for more teen angst and neutered down creatures, but with Bekmambetov, I'm thinking we might have something that has a bit of an e... - Twilight series growing up with Breaking Dawn directors?16 March 2010, 10:02 pm
It might be a little late for the Twilight series to grow up, on the last film as well, but it looks like it is, especially with this rumour of who is being considered to direct the Twilight: Breaking Dawn. It seems a little fortuitous now, looking back, that Catherine Hardwicke wasn't on the second film and that it was handed to Chris Weitz who brought it up and aged it a little more, but the third one might be aiming for an audience a bit more grown up and sophisticated than the one it's been ... - Iron Cross trailer online – Scheider's last role16 March 2010, 7:52 am
The trailer for Roy Scheider's last film, Iron Cross, has arrived online and it's a real mixed bag. It's not the best cut of a trailer I've seen and it struggles a little to move the story forward. However, it does have Scheider in it. The film tells the story of a retired New York police officer who heads to Nuremberg to visit his estranged son and mend the gulf he built between them when he turned his back on him after he rejected a career in the NYPD. While he's visiting and making good roads... - Sean Bean's twin roles in Ca$h16 March 2010, 7:33 am
I have to say that although the trailer for Ca$h doesn't look the slickest or highest production, it does have some attraction. First there's Sean Bean himself, and secondly there's Chris Hemsworth who I've enjoyed watching in True Blood. There's another reason though, Sean Bean playing two characters, both English, and both baddies. However the trailer doesn't look polished and slick, although there are some nice touches and moments in the film....Visit Filmstalker for the full story. There's not just a long audio interview online with James Cameron by the Writers Guild of America, but there's also a video of James Cameron giving a TED presentation and talking about what made him the creative person that he has become. The TED talk is an interesting one, as is the audio interview, although the TED video talk is a mere seventeen minutes whereas the WGA interview is is a much longer interview, about an hour and seven minutes....Visit Filmstalker for the full story. This trailer has me intrigued. I first heard of the film which pulled the horrifying true story into a movie back in 2006, and then again in May 2009 that the film had been held up by the courts in Germany from it's making in 2006 was allowed to be released. It uses the true story of Armin Meiwes who sourced someone on the internet who was willing to be murdered and eaten....Visit Filmstalker for the full story. The remakes are heading onwards with a pace that's nigh on crazy, and even the top directors aren't racing away from the ideas, in fact some of them are even remaking films that have just been released, like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. That was just released in the UK last week, and next week in the US, of course it was being released all through the previous year across the rest of the world, but still, we're talking about a remake in 2012, and there's a big name associated with it already... - The Howling remake goes soft and fluffy15 March 2010, 8:26 pm
I can't believe what the news is on The Howling remake and the direction it's taking. I really do hope this is just an early rough idea for the script, otherwise the excellent Howling story is going to be thrown out the window to capture that PG13 audience that is slowly taking over Hollywood. It was July 2006 that we first talked about the remake, and then we heard that Joe Nimziki was set to direct. Now we're hearing about the plot, and it sounds shocking....Visit Filmstalker for the full stor...

- You won't believe how gory and violent Repo Men is19 March 2010, 2:35 pm
The sci-fi action movie Repo Men earns its R rating in a major way: It's up there among the most graphic R-rated films to come along in a while, with dozens of characters shot, sliced, zapped and otherwise maimed or mutilated, with main characters Remy (Jude Law) and Jake (Forest Whitaker) inflicting much of the damage. Director Miguel Sapochnik doesn't flinch from the violence, and at times it's even balletic in nature....
- Monster Squad remake: '80s cheesefest or fanboy delight?19 March 2010, 2:22 pm

- Repo Men heralds a bold new talent. And a crappy film.19 March 2010, 2:00 pm
If you took just about any one scene in director Miguel Sapochnik's debut feature Repo Men—about guys who collect artificial organs out of the bodies of those who have defaulted on payment for those organs—and watched it by itself, you'd think it was part of what has to be a great movie. Or at least a pretty good one. The composition, the editing, the staging of these individual scenes show the hand of someone who is a truly gifted director. That's the individual scenes....
- Director Greg Berlanti talks LIFE AS WE KNOW IT, THE FLASH and GREEN LANTERN (He Wrote and is a Producer on Green Lantern)19 March 2010, 5:15 pm

- Jennifer Lopez Eyes Goldie Hawn Role in OVERBOARD Remake19 March 2010, 4:54 am
I think that, despite its conceptual unpopularity, there is a case to be made for the remake. But this news does not a case make. - REPO MEN Review19 March 2010, 3:56 am
Repo Men is confounding mess of a movie. It wildly throws itself between genres, tones, and styles. What’s so frustrating is that some moments are tons of fun, others are irritatingly melancholy, and then there are moments where the film is so bad it’s good. It’s a whirlwind of a picture that sweeps you up [...]...

- Review: Repo Men Worth a Watch19 March 2010, 4:48 pm
"An enjoyable sci-fi thriller." Imagine a world where everything is purchased on credit, supporting extravagant lifestyles for those who can't really afford it. And there you have the basis for the sci-fi thriller Repo Men, except it's not houses, cars, big TVs, or swimming pools that are being purchased here, but rather synthetic organs, organs that will never go bad and never stop working ... and come with a rather large price tag. With the real-life economic crisis in th...
- SXSW Review: Centurion Is Pretty Great19 March 2010, 4:10 pm
A man runs half naked, his hands bound by rope and his skin bruised and cut, through -18 degree weather atop a frozen mountain. Chased by something we cannot see, he stumbles headfirst into the snow. He gets up immediately. "My name is Quintus Dias, and this is neither the beginning nor the end of my story." So begins the new blood-soaked historical tale from horror/action director Neil Marshall. Based on the mysterious end of the famed Roman 9th Legion, we follow as General Virilus (Dom...
- Review: See Hubble on the Double19 March 2010, 4:05 pm
"It somehow makes the cosmos seem both accessible and heavenly." Hubble 3D: IMAX is worthy of both the 3D and the IMAX tags; it's a sight to behold on a massive screen. The film is a documentary about the space mission to repair the Hubble Telescope. There's an element of danger, yes, but it's more about the majesty of space. I should also mention that Leonardo DiCaprio narrates, and life is better when you've got Leo D.'s voice guiding you along. The documentary starts with...
- SXSW Report #3: Serbian Film, American Grindhouse, Monsters19 March 2010, 4:04 pm
Austin's Alamo Drafthouse, a paradise for local moviegoers and a South by Southwest screening venue, is owned by Tim League, who's also one of the founders of the genre-centric Fantastic Fest. Since there's plenty of natural overlap between the two fests' sensibilities, last year SXSW introduced SX Fantastic, a section of midnight films programmed by League. You got your Fantastic Fest in my SXSW! No, you got your SXSW in my Fantastic Fest! Et cetera! These films tend to be full of horror and...
- Review: Bounty Hunter: The Only One Running Away Should Be You19 March 2010, 4:02 pm
"Putrid, Just Putrid." Jennifer Aniston has piercing blue eyes. Gerard Butler clearly works out. And the soundtrack for The Bounty Hunter? Top-notch. Jerry Reed croons "She Got the Goldmine" near the opening credits; you'll be bouncing in your seat if you're a fan of the Charlie Daniels style of expository twang. But the film itself? Why, it's putrid, just putrid. Total nightmare scenario for the film itself. Kind of a total disaster on that subject, actually. The pr...
- SXSW Report #2: American: The Bill Hicks Story, Saturday Night, MacGruber18 March 2010, 6:32 pm
The programmers at South by Southwest know that Austin audiences are in the mood for fun, so they tend to schedule a lot of comedies. But they take it a step further: They also schedule a lot of movies about comedy. Past fests have included a road-trip documentary with Ray Romano, an account of Jeffrey Ross entertaining the troops in the Middle East, and comedian Doug Benson experimenting with a month of marijuana withdrawal. This year, the inner workings of comedy are explored in two films, A&...

I hope one day they... - Five Oscar-Worthy Female Directors18 March 2010, 4:06 pm
Now that Kathryn Bigelow has made history by becoming the first female to win a Best Director Oscar, it begs the question: Why did it take so long? Were the films of previous female directors all undeserving? Or were they simply, due to unlucky timing, up against far better directors who happened to be men? A quick perusal of the works of prominent women filmmakers to date -- like ... - Sandra Bullock, Jesse James Split?18 March 2010, 4:03 pm
UPDATE: Jesse James has publicly apologized to his wife and kids. Has Sandra Bullock dumped Jesse James? People.com reports that the Oscar-winning actress left the Southern California home she shares with her husband of five years on Monday, two days before news broke of his alleged affair with a tattoo model named Michelle "Bombshell" McGee. Bullock owns a home in Austin, Texas, where she also runs a restaurant with her sister. James reportedly told his mistress, Michelle "Bombshel... - SXSW Review: Saturday Night18 March 2010, 3:58 pm
Almost every Saturday night for the last 35 years has been dominated by a single television show. Something of a cultural thermometer, Saturday Night Live has held a comedic mirror up to America and portrayed it at its very worst, forcing us time and again to laugh out loud at ourselves, our neighbors, our celebrities, and our leaders. Performing before live audiences every week are a number of talented comedians, some legendary, others instantly forgettable. And behind those performers are a...
