Jennifer Aniston Gets Her Streisand On In Harper’s Bazaar

Sept NS Cover Jennifer Anistonsm

Though stars in magazines isn’t generally the sort of thing that gets me to pay attention, Jennifer Aniston is paying homage to Barbra Streisand with a photo shoot in Harper’s Bazaar, and I thought it was actually an interesting idea.

Will Eisner’s A Contract With God Coming To A Theater Near You

14

We are becoming familiar with the idea that filming graphic novels rarely works out the way we might hope. Alan Moore disinherits most adaptations of his work, big-budget Watchmen drastically changed the story (managing only marginal artistic success, and mixed reactions), and Will Eisner’s The Spirit quickly became a laughing stock.

In the world of App games, one of the most prevalent genres is the time-waster. Those games that are often somewhat nonsensical, are utterly simple by design, and don’t really require a lot of attention.

GetGlue iPhone App Review

I’ve been doing my best to talk up GetGlue and AdaptiveBlue for about as long as Are You Screening? has existed. Unfortunately, GetGlue has long been one of those things that I love in theory, but in actual practice find myself using far less than I would wish.

Like most things that have to do with social networks, GetGlue would take thousands of words to explain, but is nevertheless quite simple. Witness the length of explanation in their FAQ alone.

Basically, the general function of GetGlue is that it is a social network which focuses on things. Books, films, video games, wines, and many more are covered in the possibilities, and GetGlue latches onto what you’re doing on the internet to connect people by the things they’re interested in, and vice versa… sort of.

Ghost Hunters International Season One Part 1 DVD Review And Giveaway

The show Ghost Hunters has turned into a bona fide franchise. Recently renewed for another season, the show also has the spin-off Ghost Hunters International, and its own reality show with contestants vying for their chance to join the ranks.

Now available on DVD, Ghost Hunters International – Season One Part 1 brings you 11 episodes with over and hour of deleted scenes.

The paranormal investigation, and popularity, of Ghost Hunters has by now caused a stir in ever-widening circles. Even those who are quick to dismiss the paranormal in general, and the show in particular, have to face the fact that it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Though similar shows (and not so similar paranormal shows) have popped up with increasing frequency, this is the franchise that seems to have caught people’s attention.

Even among the quick to judge, who wonder aloud about such ideas like the fact that there hasn’t been a person yet who claimed to be walking around at 3:00 am in total darkness when they saw something, there’s something about the regular guys from RotoRooter that has people hooked.

New York Street Games Movie Review

Every generation in the history of mankind has talked about the good old days, so it isn’t surprising to find one more example of reminiscing about days gone by and the way things have changed. Most generations probably have some version of pointing out that things really are different in their case, but there might be a pretty good argument this time around.

New York Street Games, a feature documentary by Matthew Levy, takes a look at the games that used to be an undeniably integral part of life in New York City. Showcasing interviews with Hector Elizondo, Regis Philbin, Ray Romano, Whoopi Goldberg, Keith David, Joe Pantoliano, and many more, the film describes the games themselves, but also the life they were a part of. Things may evolve before your eyes as not that much more than a fond memory of a “Spaldeen,” but this generation may actually have something to say about what’s different, because there really is no other generation in which children suddenly lost all interest in being outside.

Dodge Challenger Goes To War For World Cup

Once in a while, something comes along that is just odd enough to get me to pay attention. If it involves the World Cup, it’s a little easier to do. If it also involves a truly bizarre commercial concept… it’s harder actually, but this one is out there in just the right way.

Dodge is picking sides, and they’re going to try to help you cheer during your favorite sporting event and mine… well, mine anyway.

Take a look at a very brief teaser, and check out some images of the Dodge Challenger getting in on some historic duty.

During his First Annual Address to Congress in 1770, President George Washington said, “To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.” For the past decade, the muscle car segment has been quietly battling to keep a sea of dull daily drivers at bay, and the tension has finally reached its fever pitch. We are standing on the cusp of a revolution, and we are nothing if not prepared. We’ve got the horsepower, the track time and the street cred – all that’s missing is the official throwing down of the gauntlet. As of today, we’ve got that, too.

New York Times Bans “Tweet” In Apparent Effort To Solidify Cluelessness

wl, and everyone else under the sun, reported today that a memo went out at The New York Times “banning” the use of the word “tweet.” Apparently, Phil Corbett, the standards editor, sent out a memo explaining the reasoning behind the “ban,” and if The Awl can reprint it, I suppose I can too.

While many have commented on the idea in the specific, should it be banned or not, I’m rather taken by the generals of the memo.

Take a look -

How About “Chirp”?

Some social-media fans may disagree, but outside of ornithological contexts, “tweet” has not yet achieved the status of standard English. And standard English is what we should use in news articles.

Except for special effect, we try to avoid colloquialisms, neologisms and jargon. And “tweet” — as a noun or a verb, referring to messages on Twitter — is all three. Yet it has appeared 18 times in articles in the past month, in a range of sections.

Killers Movie Review

I have a great fondness for movies that let me know right where I am just by naming their director. Robert Luketic may have been hard to nail down when he hit the scene with Legally Blonde, but after Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!, and Monster-in-Law we knew where we were. Then came last year’s The Ugly Truth, and though it was met with critical disdain, I came to believe I was getting a sense for the real Luketic. Sprinkling in 21, I think I’ve got a good feel for every film he’ll ever do, and I probably mean something different than you might think.

Killers, Luketic’s recent effort that keeps Katherine Heigl, but adds in Ashton Kutcher, is a film destined to be called stupid in ways too numerous to mention, and I predict many of them will be fabulously inventive. The truth is, the film really is incredibly stupid, but there’s stupid and then there’s stupid, and once the film isn’t being remotely serious, you shouldn’t be either.

Alpha And Omega Trailer

The new animated adventure by Lionsgate, Alpha and Omega, has a new trailer out, and it looks like we might have a cute ride ahead. With voice work by Justin Long, Hayden Panettiere, Christina Ricci, Danny Glover, Dennis Hopper, and more, this one should be pretty fun.

There’s a lot open as far as whether or not the wolf road picture has enough going on to sustain the runtime, but it looks from the trailer to be a good effort anyway.

Let me know what you think.

What makes for the ultimate road trip? Hitchhiking, truck stops, angry bears, prickly porcupines and a golfing goose with a duck caddy. Just ask Kate and Humphrey, two wolves who are trying to get home after being taken by park rangers and shipped halfway across the country. Humphrey is an Omega wolf, whose days are about quick wit, snappy one-liners and hanging with his motley crew of fun-loving wolves and video-gaming squirrels. Kate is an Alpha: duty, discipline and sleek Lara Croft eye-popping moves fuel her fire. Humphrey’s motto – make ‘em laugh. Kate’s motto – I’m the boss. And they have a thousand miles to go.

Back home rival wolf packs are on the march and conflict is brewing. Only Kate and Humphrey can restore the peace. But first, they have to survive each other.

Are Video Games Art? Roger Ebert Opens The Debate- Again

I happened across a similarly titled article at SciFi Wire this morning, which offered a counterpoint in that Sir Ben Kingsley seems to be of the opinion that video games are art. Check out that article here. Unfamiliar with the idea that Roger Ebert had expressed the opinion that video games aren’t art, I followed the link to his blog post on the subject. In a post titled Video games can never be art, Ebert lays out his points on the subject.

Though he has apparently made the claim before, what kicked him off was a presentation. Find that presentation below. It’s around fifteen minutes long.

In reading the first article, I didn’t think Ebert was making as strong a claim as it turns out he is, and I was rather surprised to read his thoughts on the subject. Early on he says, “I remain convinced that in principle, video games cannot be art.” (emphasis from original)

That’s the sort of thing that will spark my interest, because when someone says “in principle,” I want to know their reasoning. I was somewhat surprised that I found his reasoning decidedly flawed. In the end, I decided that his statement itself is flawed as well.

Chris O’Donnell Hits Redbook As Celebrity Hot Husband 2010

Chris O’Donnell is hitting newsstands soon, and he’ll be talking about something that doesn’t get a lot of celebrity press, his healthy marriage. As Redbook‘s pick for “celebrity Hot Husband of 2010″ (and I have no real idea what that means), he discusses his marriage, career, and home life, and it’s a pretty cool interview.

It may seem odd, but I couldn’t care less about 99% of anything accurately labeled gossip, and a less “flashy” interview is nice to read. Check out some snippets below, then find the link to the full article.

He first hit the Hollywood scene as the perfect Boy Next Door, but former teen heartthrob Chris O’Donnell has matured into the ultimate family man, with five kids of his own. The hunky Hollywood dad and star of NCIS: Los Angeles is REDBOOK’s pick for celebrity Hot Husband of 2010 and appears with his adorable kids on the flip cover of the June issue.
