Movies Now App Review

Some apps get their value by glitz and wow, but the ones that actually get used on a regular basis simply do work. Usually, pretty simple work too, but in an incredibly convenient way. Such is the case with Movies Now (or MoviesNow, or MoviesNow HD), an app for iPhone and iPad that has been getting a lot of attention recently.

It’s so simple in fact, that it largely defies description. It’s an App that will tell you what movies are playing near you, and though there are a few intricacies to the way it works, that’s about it. Rather powerful in its simplicity, the app will list movies by title, by theater, and working from the title, by time. Want to see a movie now? Here you go.

You can also buy your tickets right from the App, if the theater works with Movietickets.com.

Doodle God App Review. Why The Hell Am I “Playing” This?

If you still don't have a smartphone, you've got to get one. I may be something of a tech geek, but generally I despise gadgets for the sake of gadgets. However, at some point everyone who pays enough attention to what's going on in the world discovers that, by God, there really is an App ...

GetGlue iPhone App Review

I’ve been doing my best to talk up GetGlue and AdaptiveBlue for about as long as Are You Screening? has existed. Unfortunately, GetGlue has long been one of those things that I love in theory, but in actual practice find myself using far less than I would wish.

Like most things that have to do with social networks, GetGlue would take thousands of words to explain, but is nevertheless quite simple. Witness the length of explanation in their FAQ alone.

Basically, the general function of GetGlue is that it is a social network which focuses on things. Books, films, video games, wines, and many more are covered in the possibilities, and GetGlue latches onto what you’re doing on the internet to connect people by the things they’re interested in, and vice versa… sort of.

Neighborgoods.net – Save Money And The Earth By Sharing Your Stuff

You may have heard me mention Neighborgoods.net before, and I would have told you more about it sooner, but the truth is that I’m rather lazy (and a little busy). The brainchild of Twitter Star and LA Derby Doll Micki Krimmel (@mickipedia), NeighborGoods is a social website that allows you to share and/or rent stuff you have and/or need.

I’m reminding you again, because I just happened to find a couple of videos that run you through the thing, and I want to send you over to MyooCreate to vote.

I hate to go into the details, especially when these videos are going to do it for me, but if there was ever an idea that instantly struck me as something worth getting behind, this is it.

Check out the info, and if you think it’s as great as I do, sign up, and head over to MyooCreate and help them out.

Kristin Chenoweth vs. Newsweek – What The Hell Happened There?

Ahh… the internet. Well, that and the fun and fury of looking through lenses and/or irrationality.

If you aren’t familiar with the latest uproar, that which involves Kristin Chenoweth and Newsweek writer Ramin Setoodeh, I’d like you to take a moment to catch up yourself. Setoodeh wrote an article titled “Straight Jacket” which you can read here. The subtitle of the article is “Heterosexual actors play gay all the time. Why doesn’t it ever work in reverse?” The article kicks off by discussing the Broadway revival of Promises, Promises which stars Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth.

Chenoweth responded, calling the article “Horrendously homophobic,” and you can read her entire comment here.

A viral firestorm ensued, and Setoodeh has now responded here.

I encourage you again to read through the evidence yourself before going forward with my own comments on the debacle, and largely because I know a fair number of those responding didn’t actually read what they’re responding to.

GameFly Updates GameCenter App For iPhone And iPod Touch

I have to admit right from the start that I am not a GameFly subscriber. I am nevertheless a big fan. I find the concept brilliant, but I only have so many hours in a day, and generally purchase the games I’m after that don’t come to me for review. That’s just me. Even so… I’m sorely tempted.

GameFly has now gone a step further than movie counterpart Netflix seems willing to go, by taking their subscription service to another level with the release of an updated version of their GameCenter App. While there’s nothing in it for me, apart from a twitchy jealousy, I wanted to share the news with you. If you are already a subscriber, this is an obvious must, but I rather like it as another key to the initial sell.

Lunch.com Join Are You Screening’s “Screen Gems” Lunch Community

If you aren’t familiar with Lunch.com yet, I highly recommend that you check out the video introduction below. You’re probably aware of a host of possibilities when it comes to either getting or giving opinions on the internet, but Lunch.com has a unique spin on the idea. One of the main problems with learning about things online is that there is simply too much to sort through. Whether you’re looking for a new coffeemaker, looking to adopt a dog, or want opinions on movies, you can go to hundreds of sites, and get literally thousands of opinions thrown at you.

If you go someplace like Amazon.com, you can get buried in reviews, and those have ratings to help things somewhat, but you’ve got a lot to sort through. Wherever you go for help, how do you know where to start? You just can’t read every review.

Lunch.com believes they have a solution, and I think they’re onto something. So much so, in fact, that I am joining forces with them to create a new Lunch.com Community, and I’d like you to join me.

In Connection With Massive Clint Eastwood Box Set Release, Warner Pushing iTunes/Download Availability

The massive film collection Clint Eastwood 35 Films 35 Years at Warner Brothers might be slightly out of reach for some consumers. In order to roll out as many options as possible, many of the films are also available to rent or buy via download on iTunes, Amazon Video on Demand, Playstation 3, and more.

This particular marketing effort got me to thinking, because movies are not something I have actually downloaded through iTunes before. While I have made good use of Amazon‘s downloading possibilities, I watch those things on my television. I’ve watched a few television shows on my iPhone, but who really cares about the quality there?

Not that long ago, I wouldn’t have thought I would even ever care to watch a whole movie on my iPhone, but the theory has a lot more appeal to me now. So, I took the plunge, and since this release came at me, I couldn’t help thinking that at just about any point I might be stuck on a plane, or forced to kill time, I could probably watch Pale Rider.

Transylvania Television – The Retro Monster Comedy Series That’s Really Not For Kids! – That’s Their Own Tagline

Webshows are an especially tricky game, and part of the trick is balancing being niche enough that you’re interesting and broad enough that you can appeal to enough people to make it worth while. That’s a curious intro to a show involving monster puppets and an oddly meta-referential plot about their television station… but, there you are.

Transylvania Television takes wildly clever advantage of the twist of internet television in that before you can fully form your blank stare into a question, or remark… it’s already over. I realize that sounds like a criticism, but it isn’t. I quite seriously think it’s a wonderful move insofar as knowing your medium and using it to your best advantage.

Listen To Are You Screening? With BuzzVoice’s New Real-Time Radio Widget

You may have heard about the new BuzzVoice service that launched a while ago. It’s a service that brings your favorite internet content to you in a new way, by converting it to audio that you can listen to you anywhere. You can check out the BuzzVoice App at iTunes here, and explore the idea a bit more at the BuzzVoice website here.

They currently have more than 1,400 sources available, so no matter what you look for on the web, you’re pretty likely to find it through BuzzVoice. Every big name news site you can think of is probably on their list, and it doesn’t matter if it’s tech, entertainment, sports, or anything else.

Now, the folks at BuzzVoice really play up the “on the go” possibilities, and opening up that new avenue is certainly great, but it’s not exactly what sucks me into the concept. Audio books are obviously getting more and more popular, and the chance to add your favorite internet news, blogs, and more to your commute, or workout is great. It also opens things up to those with disabilities, and that’s a nice selling point as well.
