Welcome

Welcome and so on.

I’m expanding the welcome here after a bit of theory solidifying and a lot of emails.  As of this writing, Are You Screening? has been around for a mere nine months, has already moved, and has played around a lot with the look and feel of things.  For those who are new (and why else would you need a welcome?), I want to give you some information about what this site is, does, and just what’s going on.  There is sort of some information about me below, and the three-month-old-school version of the welcome as well.

So, in the quickest way I can manage, let me tell you what’s going on here.

What this site is -

This site, delusions of grandeur and flashy trimmings aside, is my personal blog.  That’s all it’s ever going to be.  I’ve been writing movie reviews for about ten years as of this writing, and at a point when I decided to possibly turn things up a notch, I made two other decisions at the same time… 1) I wanted to write quite a bit somewhere that was my own… 2) I wanted to write about television, the internet, and whatever popped into my mind… the vast majority of those things had screens in common.  There you go.

What this site is NOT -

This is absolutely not a news site.  This site is review and babble, not news.

Now

That being said, after playing around with a lot of ideas, and throwing things in different directions for a while, there are a lot of reasons to come here, and there are a lot of ways in which this site can get you information, or a slew of other things.

I subscribe to every feed known to man (that I like) and what I think is worth looking at gets put into a custom feed, displayed here for your enjoyment as the Newswire.  Think something is worth checking out, that’s awesome, go see it at that site.  The marketing people will say I’m crazy for telling people about good stuff at other sites (after all, the only important thing is keeping people at your site as long as possible), but that’s all a bunch of bull.  You saw what happened when that damn Santa sent people to Gimball’s… or Macy’s… or whatever.

Like I said, from time to time I may write up some sort of commentary on something that’s news-timely, but I’m not doing the news.  I know a lot of sites that are, and know some of them pretty well, and God love ‘em for doing it, but it’s not what I do.  I subscribe to all those sites, more than you’d believe, so you don’t have to, and I put my mark on certain things.  There are plenty of sites out there that are trying to be everything.  The hell with it… I’m trying to be me.

And, I’ve put together a few different ways to look at trailers.  Here we run into another NOT.  I’m not going to post the release of every trailer that comes out, or that makes it onto this site in one way or another.  Not going to happen.  Tons of sites do that already, some of them great sites, but that’s not my gig.  You can go to the videos page, and get a lot of trailers and other cool clips.  It’s a pretty cool page actually, but it’s an automated sort of thing, and not posts to the site.  I will, however, post some trailers when I really think they are interesting for some reason, but it will be rare.  On the other hand, I may put some in my sideblog with a bit more frequency.

So, in Summary

I am fairly frequently going to talk about Newsish items, but it will mostly be in the form of some commentary rather than reporting.  But, I hope to make it interesting to come back and check out the site on a daily basis.  I may not have the news or the latest, greatest thing… but I’ll still have it… see?

A quick note on that though, you may notice the absence of “really big things!” in the newswire.  Often, once everyone everywhere is talking about it, I don’t care anymore.  I probably won’t bother with it.

Older models of info and bio and so on.

This is a blog website that celebrates screening in all its forms, but not necessarily all its I.Q. demographics. Are You Screening? is mostly concerned with film criticism and television ranting, but anything with a screen is fair game. This is a blog of absolutely ludicrous levels of snooty, long-winded movie review, and untethered flames and cheers directed at television shows and their audiences.

It is also merely a shallow and dodgy attempt to gain 15 minutes by introducing Screening into common usage.

Make your friends and enemies come here, utilizing the most valiant efforts of deceit and subterfuge if need be.

Screen On!

Are You Screening? is the personal, entertainment blog of Marc Eastman.  I’ve been writing film reviews for about a decade, and I’ve finally gotten around to a blog, because… well, that’s the law.

Marc Eastman has been writing film reviews for nearly a decade, and several branches of the internet’s film review world have seen his name. His reviews have brought him personal praise from the director of a major motion picture, and have been used as required reading in a course at a major University. These priceless rewards, along with just bags of cash, keep him from straying from freelance writing.  He is also a member of The Broadcast Film Critics Association.

He has degrees in Philosophy and Secondary Education:English, and these may or may not influence his reviews and/or his general good cheer. He also has a wife, son, daughter, Great Dane, and stupid cat, all of which may also influence his general good cheer.

He is a firm believer that film criticism is not simply delivering plot synopses along with a rating, and he endeavors to convince readers everywhere that there is a difference between talking about a movie and talking “about” a movie… wherever this may lead.
