Beautiful Creatures is actually better than a lot of people are obviously going to give it credit for, and the books apparently don’t have enough of a following to stir up momentum. It’s actually a fun ride, but it’s unfortunately spoiled by a lack of focus.
Jeremy Irons has some cool moments, and Emma Thompson is… interesting, but the film stumbles along, not sure of what it really wants to be. It seems that it wants to draw the Twilight crowd, but also wants to differentiate itself sufficiently from that film, and pulls itself in two directions with most of its effort.
We couldn’t rate it that highly, but it really is pretty fun, even if it may seem rather disposable.
