Lincoln took us both by surprise, and in an odd way by the time we made it through the entire show. A strong film, ultimately deserving of the praise its receiving, it still didn’t work well enough for us to get similarly high ratings. We both found a curious battle going on within the film, and it seemingly tried to be two different movies, and both approaches jockeyed for position in a disjointed, distracting way.
The parts we liked, we loved, and if the movie had stuck to its main effort, we would have both given it five stars easily, but for some reason it refused to do that. Interview clips we played during the show of both Daniel Day-Lewis and Steven Spielberg made things all the more frustrating, as the film they describe is the one we wanted.
Still, it’s highly recommended, and as I said, where it’s good, it’s great. I doubt many will be disappointed, and this may well be a case where the film critic in us just couldn’t get past certain difficulties that won’t bother most viewers.
