USA's hit from last summer, Royal Pains, is back this Thursday, June 3rd for a second season. As you probably know, last season wound down by throwing a lot at us, and the fate of HankMed was up in the air from several fronts.
The second season kicks off by introducing a patient with his own father issues, and by starting on the road to piecing back together the "practice." Unfortunately, on other fronts, Jill's job comes under serious scrutiny.
Hank and Divya treat the heir of a famous inventor whose desire to distance himself from his father puts him in harm's way. Meanwhile, Jill's job at Hamptons Heritage is threatened when her mentor starts proceedings to have her fired.
Though USA has a near perfect track record with me, I was skeptical going into Royal Pains last year. Not only does a show about a semi-unwilling concierge doctor and his flaky brother partner sound less than intriguing, the pilot didn't especially win me over. I liked it well enough, but I wasn't convinced.
But, as the show stabilized, I was hooked pretty quickly. Mostly, I think, as a result of the charisma of the actors involved.
With a very solid run behind it, the show returns apparently feeling a bit more confident about itself, and with a greater willingness to expand its universe. Moving into the second episode of the season we get a recurring role with Henry Winkler, and as things progress we leave the Hamptons, and explore the characters (all of them) to a much greater degree.
You're going to get a solid season opener, which sets the stage for the direction we're going to be heading. Don't miss it.
