A&E’s Fugitive Chronicles Review And Giveaway

A&E's new show, Fugitive Chronicles, is hitting tomorrow, and while generally not my cup of tea, I like the way this one is put together. Reenacting the hunt, pieced together from case files, the fugitives statements, and more, the show plays out the hunt from both sides, with interview footage of the men who did the chasing.

The new spin, from my point of view anyway, is hearing the fugitive relate the ordeal, and getting the full picture of how things happened. Standing out as the most interesting aspect of the show so far is how easy it seems to be to get away in the short term, even if it's pretty hard to keep up.

As I said, this isn't a show that I would especially figure to like, but it's pretty captivating, and if you're at all interested in this sort of thing, you won't be disappointed. Some chases are bound to be more interesting than others, but the storytelling is a cut above anything remotely in the same genre.

To celebrate the show's premiere, I've got a great giveaway for you. Read on for the details.

A&E presents “Fugitive Chronicles,” an original docu-drama series that cinematically brings to life the most compelling fugitive captures in recent history. Through gritty reconstructions, archival footage, fugitive narrative recreated from real testimony and exclusive taped interviews with law enforcement officials, each one-hour episode dramatically brings each infamous manhunt to life. “Fugitive Chronicles” premieres Thursday, April 1 at 10PM ET/PT on A&E.

“This show pioneers a new genre of television because it artfully blends true-life narrative and scripted filmmaking,” said Robert Sharenow, Senior Vice President of Nonfiction and Alternative Programming, A&E Network and BIO. “This innovative format will fit perfectly with A&E’s slate of both real-life and scripted justice programming.”

The nine-episode season of “Fugitive Chronicles” kicks off with prison escapee Ralph “Bucky” Philips, a career criminal who spent most of his life in and out of prison. His flight set off the most expensive manhunt in New York’s history as Bucky led hundreds of state troopers on a cat and mouse chase through the towns and backwoods of western New York for the better part of five months. Captain Steve Nigrelli spearheaded the ground manhunt to catch him, and will never forget the horrific events of that summer. During his time on the run a host of extraordinarily lucky and reckless maneuvers allowed Bucky to remain free and the fugitive was able to thwart the high profile investigation for five months in 2006.

Fugitive Chronicles premieres Thursday April 1st at 10/9c on A&E!

At the heart of each gripping real-life manhunt will be the cinematic reconstruction of the exhaustive efforts that take place, often in very dangerous conditions, to find and bring a fugitive to justice. Told from the perspective of the hunter and the hunted, these dramatic true-life stories are told through exclusive interviews with law enforcement officials closest to the case and the fugitive’s story based on real interrogation tapes, court transcripts and news footage. Officials will share exactly when they learned of the fugitive’s flight, what their first course of action was and how they went about executing their heart-pounding takedown. While I enjoyed the episode on Bucky Phillips, there was a lot left unsaid. Pennsylvania State Police and Warren County, Pa Sheriff's Dept played a large part in the capture of Bucky. They pushed him right into the arms of the N.Y. State Police. Yet no recognition was made to their heroric efforts. Oh and another thing, Chattaughua Co. is in the southern tier of N.Y. not Upper N.Y.

i'm game, will have to try to remember to check out this show

As much as I wanted to like this show–it was well-staged–there was a glaring flaw. The N.Y. State police did NOT capture Bucky Phillips. He was caught in Pennsylvania after Pennsylvania sheriff's deputies spotted him in a stolen car deep across the border. This discredits the entire series in my eyes. If they are going to pick and choose major facts for each case, then it's no better than fiction.

I thought it was cluttered and confusing. They try to jam too much into one hour. It was all over the place and very much needed to be more focused. The acting was not convincing in many places either. I know it was a mixture of reality tv, docudrama etc. But when it got down to the reenactments, whoever directed it did a poor job because the actors were not very convincing. They needed better actors.

Looking at crimes from the criminal's perspective in order to improve law enforcement and crime prevention efforts seems to be a trend in recent years
