You may be well aware of my fondness for Gordon Ramsay. I've talked up his shows several times in the past, and while there are certainly a lot of people out there who write him off for all his screaming, you just have to like Kitchen Nightmares. Whatever else you might say about (I'll probably disagree), this show is reality television at its best. Love him or hate him, if the show does nothing else, it helps some people out who are in serious trouble. Often with everything they have at risk, and too thick-headed or downright foolish to get themselves out of it, these people are going to lose it all if something doesn't happen.
Here comes Gordon to save the day. Well, let's face it, the production money behind the show, which often refurbishes the place doesn't hurt either. Of course, part of what's fun about the show is the curious nature of people that also drives other shows which are similar in structure - namely, the inability to be wrong, even in the face of having called someone in order to tell them you're wrong. On the brink of bankruptcy, with no real ideas where else to turn, people call in Gordon Ramsay to help them turn things around. Should he actually tell them that they are doing anything wrong, however, watch out.
Plug in the relevant idea for Supernanny, or whatever other show you like, and the results are generally the same.
There's a certain odd fascination to the idea that people might recognize some of these places, and there are a few that you actually hope Gordon can't help, but when you get to the revisit episodes, you'll be glad you helped support the show.
The new season kicks off tonight (Friday) at 9/8c. If you haven't caught it before, give this one a chance. You'll also want to check out the show's website, where you'll get a lot more information about the restaurants, along with a lot of other goodies.
Here are few clips from tonight's episode.
