In other words, I loved the Nelson Eddy musicals when operetta meant incredibly-inane-story-you'd-probably-appreciate-more-if-it-were-in-a-different-language-and-you-couldn't-understand-it.<br><br>However, I haven't been impressed with a modern made musical movie in years. Oh, I've seen some excellent ones on stage and even admired some that were recorded as if they were stage productions (like Cats) I liked just fine. However, I can't think of a single non-animated musical I've cared enough to watch a second time made for screen in the last twenty years. That includes Chicago, Evita, and Phantom and any number of others.<br><br>I don't know if it's the caliber of the singing, or the enthusiasm. I still love many old musicals, even the really dumb ones, but something's missing in the new ones and I can't seem to put my finger on what it is.<br><br>None of that applies to the animate musicals, which still run rampant.
