Daybreakers – New Images And Three New Clips

To be completely honest, I’m as surprised as anyone to find myself fairly excited for the release of Daybreakers. Opening January 8th, this backward spin to vampire stories seems like it may have the right mix of outlandish elements. Will the Spierig twins launch their careers with what has all the makings of at the very least a cult hit? Always a tough call, but there’s just something about this one that has me interested. I’m as over vampires as anyone at the moment, but it’s hard to put me off dark and crazy.

Take a look at the complete collection of stills, and three new clips.

Two-time Academy Award nominee® Ethan Hawke plays Edward Dalton, a researcher in the year 2019, in which an unknown plague has transformed the world’s population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race.

Extract Blu-Ray Review – Win Yours Here

When I first saw Office Space, I can’t say that I was horribly impressed, but there was certainly a lot of quotable fun in the watching. After further viewings, I’m not sure the film quite deserves it’s cult status, but some moments do. Extract is a film clearly from the same mind, and with much the same perspective on humor. Whether or not it manages to hold the same level of interest is difficult to predict, largely because it would have been so difficult to predict it the first time around.

Extract is the story of Joel (Jason Bateman), mild-mannered owner of a company that produces extracts and flavorings. He built himself up from nothing, but life isn’t all that fun anymore. His home life is not particularly interesting in the sense that he and his wife have become something better described as roommates. His employees are a motley assortment that he babysits. His best friend Dean (Ben Affleck) still tends bar where he and Joel used to work together, and his offerings of such advice and assorted pills is getting old.

Jennifer’s Body DVD Review

Diablo Cody took the world by storm with the release of Juno, and while I actually didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as many, there was a certain something there that you had to appreciate. The film itself (though it’s likely to get some retroactive attention now since it was directed by Jason Reitman) seemed solidly in the range of freshman writing and freshman big effort directing. Above-average certainly, but not quite as fantastic as the hype would lead you to believe.

But, there was a perspective in there that had to be admired, and made the film far more watchable than it deserved to be. There was a freshness, and a semi-bold attitude of telling things the way some uniquely “I” wanted to tell them, whether that worked or not. That was fun to watch, even if things leaned a little more toward the “or not.”

The Young Victoria Movie Review

One of the most fascinating things you can achieve in film is taking a story that seems decidedly difficult to spin into something interesting, and come up with an end result that is curiously mesmerizing. Of course, given different tastes the available subjects for the apparently dull by definition may include a wide variety of topics. Still, Princess Victoria and Prince Albert fall in love largely by mail in the early 1800s is a tough sell. Even adding in the fact that both of them are being hounded by those who want to take advantage of their potential power, it’s hard to imagine how the idea holds interest for any length of time.

The Young Victoria somehow manages not only to deliver a story that portrays its characters as outstandingly real people, but pulls you into itself to a degree that is almost unbelievable. Leaving you transfixed while you are at the same time unsure how it is managing to be interesting at all is a neat trick.

It’s Complicated Movie Review

It certainly is complicated, there’s no doubt about it, but does it deliver anything worth bothering with? It’s Complicated is the story, more or less, of Jane (Meryl Streep) and Jake (Alec Baldwin). Divorced for a decade, but finally somewhat amicable, the two will run into each other by way of one of their three children’s college graduation. Meeting at the hotel bar, they make the most of being cordial, drink a lot, and end up sleeping together.

Jake cheated on Jane all those years ago, and ended up marrying his mistress (after she had a fling on him which resulted in a child). Jane took several years getting over it, but has finally gotten a restaurant for herself and some idea of who she is… even if she hasn’t quite managed to get into another relationship. So, now… it’s complicated.

Nine Movie Review

Director Rob Marshall is an oddity of the directing world that is rather more difficult to figure than people might expect. With little to recommend him apart from choreography work and a variety of Broadway credits before going into Chicago, the popularity of that film gave him some degree of credibility. His Memoirs of a Geisha is actually a superior effort, though not as widely accessible. Now he brings us Nine , already of staggering positive reception. Apparently he will next be coming at us with the next Pirates of the Caribbean film. Go figure that.

But, somewhere along the road from Chicago to Nine, something has gone wrong. While I only found Chicago slightly above-average overall, there was a definite idea, direction, and purpose. It was the sort of thing you could hardly fault people for liking much more than I did. The musical numbers were sewn in quite well, the acting was solid, and the characters had purpose and a fair amount of soul.

Wizards of Waverly Place Extended Edition DVD

It continues to amaze me that some of the best shows on television are those that are aimed at younger audiences, while primetime fare frequently falls so short of watchability. Shows like The Wizards of Waverly Place, iCarly, and several others have me sitting down with my son more often than I can believe, and big money programs aimed at adults leave me feeling insulted more often than not.

The Wizards of Waverly Place movie is now available on DVD, and while it isn’t loaded with special features, it’s a nice enough package and a fun adventure.

The most magical event of the year is now even bigger, with more thrilling adventure! Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie Extended Edition features exclusive footage, behind-the-scenes bonus and awesome extras that take you deeper into the mysterious world of wizardry! Embark on a supernaturally exciting adventure as the Russos, your favorite family of wizards-in-training, join together on a quest full of heart-stopping action and hilarious magical mishaps!

G-Force Blu-Ray Review Plus Hoyt Yeatman, Nicolas Cage, And Bill Nighy Q&A Interviews

The surprisingly watchable rodent adventure, G-Force, is now out on DVD and Blu-Ray, and the family-friendly, silly thrills are put together in a nice package, especially if you can take advantage of the Blu-Ray edition.

As much as this is rather a goofy starting point, the end result is far more… well, I want to say “sophisticated,” but I can’t bring myself to do it. The end result is more mature, and built around a solid, if child-oriented, frame. It’s also put together with a stronger sense of comedy than you’re likely to expect.

Zach Galifianakis, known only as Ben, runs a small research project for the FBI, sort of… or something. His project hopes to communicate with various animals, and get them to perform tasks which would be of incredible value to the government. However, his project has had far more success than anyone would dream possible. He has managed to create gadgets which allow guinea pigs and moles to talk, and has outfitted them with an array of rodent-sized tech which renders them their own class of super spies.

Avatar Movie Review

There’s something to the responses you’re going to hear that rather negatively call out Avatar as having the same story as Dances with Wolves and any number of “going native” films, though it should be remembered that none of them are particularly original stories themselves. Apart from going to an alien world to meet your natives, and becoming one of them by transferring your mind into a created body, there isn’t that much that separates Avatar from any number of films, and that’s something you have to look at more openly than some may care to.

After all, people have liked those other films that will be mentioned, and at best they are equally similar to each other.

What I suspect will come flooding forward among what negative reviews Avatar receives is a kind of misplaced response, but one that is understandable. The truth is, the problem is not that Avatar is simply Dances with Aliens, it is that it is that same story told so poorly.

Angus, Thongs, And Perfect Snogging On DVD

ANGUS, THONGS & PERFECT SNOGGING is directed and produced by Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham, Bride & Prejudice), from the screenplay she co-scripted with Paul Mayeda Berges, Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi.

This hilarious coming-of-age story is based on the international best-selling series of books by the British author Louise Rennison, and follows the eccentric and irresistible Georgia Nicolson as she overcomes the trauma of being a teenager.

Georgia Nicolson is played by Georgia Groome. Alongside her playing fellow Ace Gang members are Eleanor Tomlinson as Jas, Georgia Henshaw as Rosie and Manjeeven Grewal as Ellen. Aaron Johnson, Sean Bourke, Alan Davies, Karen Taylor and T4’s Steve Jones (making his acting debut) also star.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Ultimate Edition

Next in line for the Ultimate Edition experience, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is another fantastic treatment that is a definite must own for fans of the series. With theatrical and extended versions of the film, all the bonuses of previous issues, plus the next chapter in the Creating the World of Harry Potter series of specials – Characters, any Potter fans are going to love this.

Even moderate fans are really going to appreciate the new series of specials. Characters is an hour and twenty minutes of behind-the-scenes and interview footage that covers the creation and exploration of the characters from all the films. It includes footage of the cast now and during production, and is really an exceptional study of a wide variety of the people you see in the films. Even I, who am not particularly Potter mad, found the look back really enjoyable. The time is filled well, and there’s something for everyone. Whether you want to know a few juicy bits from the stars, how certain actors approached their roles, or the thoughts behind decisions of what you do and don’t see on film, it’s all there. Particularly interesting is the full range of the effort.

The Critics’ Choice Awards Vs. The Golden Globes Vs. A Really Stupid Question

The Critics’ Choice Awards and The Golden Globes announced their nominations this week (and someone asked a really stupid question), and I thought I’d give you a comparison-style look at what’s hunting for awards. Do you know the ins and outs of these categories? These movies? Should you? Do you care? Do you have a really stupid question?

Leslie Gornstein, who I guess is The Answer B!tch at E!Online’s website (or whatever), apparently received this question -

Why does the movie industry even give out awards anymore? It’s not like anybody cares what they think. New Moon was the biggest phenomenon of 2009, and the critics can’t stand it.
—Glama, Detroit via the Answer B!tch inbox

This led to The Answer B!tch’s article, If New Moon Doesn’t Win Awards, What’s the Point of Awards?

In the article she goes on to say such things in response as -

Increasingly, the movies Hollywood likes to honor are not the same movies people like you want to see. (The Hurt Locker was great, according to the Hollywood Foreign Press. Did you see it? Exactly.) There are some exceptions—I’ll share some examples in a second—but the real question is why.

The answer may kind of insult you…

…and that’s that Hollywood—the moviemakers and the critics—seems to kind of not like you.

and

In other words, Hollywood knows you liked New Moon and Star Trek and Transformers 2—it’s wallowing around in all that Twilight cash as I write this. But by nominating brutal fare like Precious andHurt Locker for Globes and (I’m sure) Oscars, it’s saying, “Here’s what you should like—ya tools.”

But it isn’t working.

A Single Man Movie Review

There’s something about just making it through the day that is a force of fear to be reckoned with when the mind is turned toward it. In A Single Man, Colin Firth‘s character George mentions just getting through the day, as one might when going through a difficult time, but he’s putting a gun in his satchel on the way to his job as a college professor, and he means something a little different.

George lost his partner, Jim, not long ago in a car accident, and he’s having trouble dealing with the idea. What makes this film an interesting account of such an idea is that it is rather unlike George, and there is some sense in which he is wondering at his grief as much as he is simply experiencing it. That might be misleading, because George as deep and sentimental a guy as you could want to find, and being torn up by the loss of your partner is nothing like truly out of character for him… but, something slightly off is going on.
