The 2002 update of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was a bit more serious an endeavor than people probably suspect, and the show is a lot of fun and a solid effort. Aimed at a somewhat older audience than the original, or at least an audience less inclined toward the rather silly, the show is darker and more serious… but still with a guy whose main “power” is the ability to elongate his neck.
While the general theory of either He-Man show may easily (and probably legitimately) be written off as bizarrely goofy, the strange heroes and villains, and curious combination of old and new (swordfights and laser battles) create a kind of action adventure that really seems to work for the target audience.
The DVD release also comes with some interesting bonuses. This is a class of release that doesn’t lend itself to a great deal of expense being put into the special features, and seeing a good effort is a plus of its own. 12 audio commentaries alone is more work and treat than you’d expect, and some of them are decidedly interesting. That interest mostly comes by way of answering questions like – Why do this update at all, and what are we hoping for here?
There’s also a PDF Comic Book of the never-produced 40th episode.
