The Stepfather – DVD – Win Yours Here

In time for the theatrical release of the film's reworking, The Stepfather, the classic horror movie of extreme discomfort from 1987 has come to DVD. The reviews are coming in, and they pretty solidly suggest... you watch the original.

stepfatherA highlight from a different age of tense horror, The Stepfather showcases solid direction and focuses the fear on unnerving you far more than simply having blood fly. Terry O'Quinn, of LOST, is superb, and quite frankly there's a bit of John Locke at work here.

Jerry Blake (Terry O’Quinn, ABC’s Lost) is a man obsessed with having the perfect “American Dream” life — including the house with the white picket fence in the suburbs, complete with an adoring wife and loving children. He believes he’s found it when he marries Susan Maine and becomes the stepfather to Susan’s 16-year-old daughter, Stephanie. But Stephanie gets an uneasy feeling when she is around Jerry with his “Father Knows Best” attitude — she can see that there is a darker side behind his cheerful exterior... Could she just be going through the typical teenager rebellion against her new stepfather, or could he be the same man who brutally murdered his family just one year earlier?

The DVD includes a commentary track with director Joseph Ruben. You may not be familiar with the name, but he directed Sleeping with the Enemy, Money Train, Return to Paradise, and The Forgotten, and the commentary is quite an interesting mix of insight and nostalgia.

Also included is the featurette The Stepfather Chronicles, an all-new retrospective with interviews with a variety of people involved with the film. Joseph Ruben, actress Jill Schoelen, author Brian Garfield, and others make appearances, and it's a nice treat to get some exposure to the original crew on a release such as this.

While this is a release that will clearly fly under the radar for a lot of people, don't let it escape your notice that this was selected as one of the year's top 10 movies by Vanity Fair, Village Voice, LA Weekly, and was pretty solidly received by critics in general.

I didn't think the remake wasn't that bad, but it is good to see the original being given its' due.

I was an extra in the ABC-TV movie of the week, “When the Time Comes” in 1987. I wrote Terry O'Quinn a note and he responded within a week. He told me he was in a new film called “The Stepfather.” I saw it the day it came out and loved it. Not many films in that genre as good as that one. The acting makes the movie top notch. Especially Terry O'Quinn.

This film was very surprising. Loved the part in the basement where he is talking to himself and his step-daughter catches him. Great horror film. I can not believe they made a PG-13 remake out of it.

I haven't decided if I'll see the remake or not. I'd be pretty surprised if it was better than the original. (Plus, I have a hard time imagining anyone else besides TOQ as the Stepfather.)
I'm looking forward to getting the DVD.. (Of the original)

i saw the re-make this past weekend. i loved it more than 2 and 3. not one. i kind of liked the original better becasue of terry (john locke) o quinn. he kicked ass as the stepfather and kicks ass as john locke on the best tv show ever. lost. when it ends in may it'll go down in history as the best tv show ever. i think it will.

Terry O'Quinn is so tremendously creepy in this.

I know you didn't say anything about including the word “win” in our comment but… win

Great film! Terry O’Quinn shines and the plot keeps moving!

Just rented this, first time seeing it since it was a new release (on VHS) over 20 years ago. Creeped me out then, but in watching it again, it really is an excellent satire. O’Quinn really hits the ball out of the park in this – how is this guy not a bigger deal?

Terry O’Quinn shines as the devious stepfather. Shelley Hack also gives a great performance as does the daughter. Great atmosphere to it. I highly recommend this film and look forward to seeing the remake.
