One Eskimo – The Adventures Of One Eskimo With Exclusive Sneak Peek Of Next Week’s Episode

One Eskimo is a difficult group to describe, and their new “visual album,” makes for an equally challenging task. Some have noted their recent tour with Tori Amos as a good start in approaching a description of their musical style, but I’m not sure that’s as helpful as is apparently believed.

One Eskimo is an indie-jazz hybrid that hints at small coffee shops and bookstores you think stay open despite the fact that only you know about them. It’s the music playing in the background that you lower your eyebrows at when you walk in the door, but if you’re still in the place by the fourth song, you own it.

The Adventures of One Eskimo, a visual album currently available through the sixth episode at iTunes, is a truly first-of-its-kind musical/visual experience that combines the songs with narrative animation that tells a complete story over the course of the entire album.

The visual styling is wonderfully in sync with the music it accompanies, and the combination is somewhat mesmerizing. Ever stare at an album for 45 minutes? You will. The clever, addictive lyrics pull you along through the adventure, and the laid back tunes make the overall album one of the best examples of background music that will never remain in the background ever.

You definitely want to give this one a listen.

Produced by Passion Pictures, well known for their award-winning Gorillaz animation, “The Adventures of One eskimO” takes viewers on an animated journey through an epic love story starring our hero One eskimO and his band of animal friends that include Monkey, Giraffe and Penguin.  The story begins with One eskimO and the love of his life Little Feather living peacefully in their igloo home, enjoying life as it passes by.  One evening, Little Feather and One eskimO are torn apart by a dark force known as Mr. Top Hat who controls the world through his crystal ball.  Our forlorn eskimO mopes around, pining for his lost love, imagining that she has left him for Mr. Top Hat.  Through the help of a wise and brave owl he learns that she is in great peril.  With only a knapsack and an enduring love, One eskimO sets out with his band of animal friends on an epic quest to rescue her.

Users are confronted with a series of challenges and games set by the dastardly Mr. Top Hat which they have to overcome if they ever want One eskimO to see Little  Feather again.  Each game corresponds to major plot points from the animations themselves and employs the same unique look and feel. The online experience allows fans to delve deeper into the story and to feel part of the world of One eskimO.

One eskimO, the band, is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Kristian Leontiou, One eskimO arrives with an impressive breadth of imagination that instantly marks them as something extraordinary.  Produced by Rollo Armstrong (Faithless, Dido), the music is an ambitious and affecting collection of widescreen modern pop, alive with iridescent textures and intricately crafted songcraft.  Songs like “Hometime” and “Kandi” (featuring an indelible chorus sampled from Candi Staton’s classic “He Called Me Baby”) are moving and expressive, touching upon such universal themes as love and heartbreak, success and failure.  The band’s debut album will premiere in September on Shangri-La Recordings.
