If you haven’t caught Lockup on MSNBC yet, you’re really missing an interesting facet of television’s abilities. While reality TV continues to spin out of control down avenues of the useless and uninteresting (witness the recent bow of “other” Kardashian show to high ratings), Lockup is an intelligent and somewhat inspired documentary effort.

The show digs into the lives of guards and inmates at the nation’s highest-security prisons, and the results are rarely routine. From prisons all over the country, and focusing on inmates who have to find a way to survive, the show provides a harsh account of what happens behind bars. Details are practically impossible, as the label “Raw” is not undeserved. This is especially true given the candid, immersive effort of the show that is often more than a little unnerving.
