Coolspotters – Connecting Products To Movies… And Celebrities

Entertainment Weekly has recently come up with a “We Found It” section wherein they show the things celebrities are wearing or using in films or on TV, and then they show you where you can buy it.  Well, there’s a website out there that functions based on the same principle, and it’s a pretty snazzy affair.  It’s called Coolspotters, and the basic function is that its pages connect celebrities, films, and a variety of other things, to products and to each other.

coolspottersNow, I’m not particularly one for caring a lick about who is wearing what, or anything in the realm of keeping up with trends, but this site is pretty cool, and serves a variety of functions.  Of course, if you do aim to keep up with fashion and are interested in knowing the latest thing so-and-so is wearing, look no further.  Coolspotters is a user-updated fashion-spotting whirlwind.  Pick your favorite celebrity, and you’ll be taken to a page that lets you know what they’re wearing, using, and otherwise what products they may be associated with.

I have to admit, my intial reaction to Coolspotters was some mix of fear and indifference.  Then I started looking around, and started thinking about some of the connections you can find.  Actually focusing on some of the movie pages for a while made me realize that there have been times I wanted to know about a product from a movie I watched.  I’m not saying I wanted to run right out and get it (though maybe I did), but I’ve often wanted to know something about things I’d seen.

Search for a movie on Coolspotters, and you’ll get a page like this one for Iron Man.  You’re going to get links to the stars of the film, in case you want to check out their personal pages, and below that you’ve got a list of the products connected with the film.  Iron Man is a particularly good example for me, because while Entertainment Weekly might find it fabulous to tell me where I can get someone’s jeans, I’m more interested in that awesome chair.

Coolspotters runs on Spots, and Spots are the associations between people (or movies) and products.  Go to a person’s profile, and you’ll see their Spots.   Start your own account, and you can start adding your own Spots.

As I said, there really are a lot of possibilities with this site.  Now, I would never have thought of this particular use, but check out this video of Coolspotters on CNBC to see one way to put it to work.

So, I’ll be honest, my initial reaction has not completely left me.  Another vehicle for people to just drool all over celebrities and another outlet for some odd pseudo-stalking is not high on my priorities.  Even with my reservations, I’ve played around on the site quite a bit, and the layout lends itself well to exploring.  Sure, I don’t need to know what purse I’m supposed to buy this week, because whoever was seen with one.  I’m not losing any sleep trying to find out if I’ve got the right kind of flip-flops.  But, I’m curious to know about some of the things given exposure in movies and television.  And, what the hell, I might want to know what glove Dustin Pedroia uses.
