Movies Planet – Film Fan Meets Social Internet

Movies Planet is a little bit different option when it comes to watching movies and TV shows online.  The site is built solidly around a social structure, and incorporates a lot of possiblities beyond simply watching free movies.

The site offers a variety of ways to browse, user recommendations, your own ratings, and the whole thing integrates their forum, with private messaging system,  into just about every aspect of interacting with the site.  The My Zone page lists your personal collections, friends, favorites, links, and more.  The Movies page offers you Movies Planet‘s own magazine format, where you can get movie news, and browse films by popularity or genre.  It’s all put together to offer a creative and unique online vehicle to watch movies.

It’s a pretty fun site, and its most compelling feature is the interaction with other users.  You can browse through user lists and easily find people with similar tastes.  Find new shows to watch in a few clicks, and connect with other movie fans.  In a variety of ways, the interface is pretty clever, offering good suggestions on what you might want to check out based on where you are at the time.

The page for any given movie will offer up a variety of links to find out more about the film.  Actor biographies are available, as well as movie trivia, quotes, mistakes, and links to official sites, etc.  You also generally have links to a variety of places to watch trailers.  It’s a pretty handy collection of possibilities in one place if you’re looking to watch movies online.

I recommend taking a look at the site.  It’s a very nice effort at “one-stop shopping” for deciding what to watch, and having industry news tied in with user recommendations.  Put things together with chat, forums, IM, polls, and a variety of other ways to create your own corner of the movie and television universe, and the site is really pretty clever.

Of course, the whole crux of such an idea is that there be plenty of other users.  That’s something I’ve really tried to check out since I first heard about this site a few months ago.  They are at well over 200,000 members as I write this, and I have rarely gone to the site and seen less than 400 members online.  The interaction and connection possibilities seem to really be there.
