Welcome to ScreenTime!
This week, web phenom Casey McKinnon graces the pages of Are You Screening?
You may know her from Galacticast, A Comicbook Orange, or Kitkast, three popular and wonderful webshows she has been involved with. You may know her from her column in The Guardian. You may even just know her from her daily self-portrait on flickr. Then again, you may just know her as the most frequent referrent of “sexy geek,” or from her twitterings of awesomeness.
However you may know her, I know you’re a big fan. How could you not be? Casey tells me there is further awesomeness on the way in the near future so stay tuned in to Caseyness in general. You know you want to.
Without further rambling on my part, let’s get to know a few things about her screening sensiblities…
1. Since we happen to be entering television’s return from rerun hiatus, what’s the show you are most eagerly anticipating… and perhaps why?
I’ve been excited for Joss Whedon‘s Dollhouse ever since I heard about it last year. As a fan of Whedon’s work in the Buffyverse, I’ve been hungry for more… and I’m hoping that this series will finally satiate that hunger, especially since I wasn’t able to get into Firefly.
2. You obviously have a very active and, dare I say, wild sense of humor, is there a comedy movie that you feel one might say, “sums you up?” And/Or, is there a particular comedy that might be seen as a good way to “get to know you”? And… can you elaborate?
Even though I can be quite humorous, it’s impossible for me to think of a comedy that sums me up. Superficially, I’m a person covered with a comedic persona… but on the inside, I’m a lot more like Kill Bill – I never forget, and I will get my revenge.
3. We’ve seen your work in the realm of vlogs/webshows. As perhaps one of the founders of the whole game, are there any webshows you really love that you think aren’t getting enough attention?
No, but I can name a few that are getting too much attention. Oh, snap!
In all honesty, this is a tough question. As a creator, I don’t have much time to check out everyone’s work. However, I always have time to check out my friends’ projects, so my favorite web series of all time include: Epic Fu; The Guild; and, The Show with Ze Frank.
4. You’ve become something of a personality on Twitter, and there is some technical sense in which Twitter involves screens, so… who are a few people on Twitter, that you did not and do not know in real life, that you would really miss if they disappeared from Twitter tomorrow?
I like to use TweetDeck, and have a list called “BFFs” so that regardless of how many people I actually follow, I will always be able to stay up to date with what my best friends are doing. I actually started following @Veronica, @FeliciaDay, @SeanBonner, and @Templesmith before we were acquainted in person… and now they’re all on my BFF list. I think that says it all.
5. You Tweet about video games occasionally, what video games have you hooked right now, and are there any on the horizon you’re really looking forward to?
Aside from my very public love of Rock Band, I’m currently playing a lot of Left4Dead… which, unfortunately, makes me feel sick to my stomach when I play it too long due to the pukey sound of the Boomers!
As for the future, I look forward to more Half-Life, more Portal, more Rock Band song additions, and F.E.A.R. 2, which looks A.W.E.S.O.M.E.
6. Back to TV, is there a new show this season that is getting its hooks into you, or that you already love? Assuming it isn’t the same show as question 1, can you give me a little something about why you like it?
Biggest Loser Couples… because who doesn’t enjoy watching weight loss while sitting on the sofa eating inhuman amounts ice cream?
7. I found this a pretty dreadful year for theatrical releases, but with a few hidden gems here and there. Can you give me 3 movies you really enjoyed this year that are outside of the box-office money top 10, and tell me a little about why you liked them?
I’ve seen a LOT of movies this year, but am a very critical person. Here are my top three of 2008:
1- Wanted: Though many comic purists couldn’t get over how different the movie was from the graphic novel, I thought it was wonderful. I didn’t go in expecting much, but I was shocked at the twist, and enjoyed James McAvoy’s performance very much. God Emperor Leto Atreides II FTW!
2- Blindness: I was expecting more story to this film, and more scenes (90% of the movie takes place in quarantine), but judging from my heart rate during this movie – the movie actually triggered me to have a panic attack in the theater – this one was a slow, but decent winner.
3- Zack & Miri Make a Porno: Was a great mix of comedy and romance for our generation. Someday I’ll watch this again… but without the ignorant b*tch kicking my seat in the theater!
8. If I gave you a television network, and an unlimited budget, but demanded that the lineup had to be 50% new shows that you develop, and 50% syndicated shows that have been off the air for at least five years… can you describe that television network for me?
Dangerous idea, giving me a television network. I’d probably start funding myself to make all my own dream shows (which can only be compared to the silliness of Adult Swim) and play a bunch of my favorite b-movies and old genre shows I haven’t seen in a while, like: Barbarella; Logan’s Run movie and TV series; the entire Planet of the Apes movie series and TV series; Space: 1999; Star Trek DS9; Babylon 5; V; and Dark Angel.
9. Since it’s hard to avoid the factoid that you are frequently referred to as the “world’s sexiest geek,” what is the “geekiest” thing taking up a lot of space on your radar right now?
The geekiest thing taking up my radar right now is a secret project I’m working on that I hope to announce in a few months. I’m also redesigning my web site, watching the final season Battlestar Galactica and reading lots of great graphic novels (currently reading Sentences: The Life of M.F. Grimm and Scott Pilgrim vs. The Universe).
10. For any movie that is soon to be released, or any television show currently airing… If you could halt production right now and take it over, what would you do to make sure it was “done right?”
I would halt production of Dune (2010)… Then, I should be hired as “advisor” on the production. Though the previous two Dune movies were both amazing collectively, they both fail on their own to portray the perfection of the book. As advisor, I’d need to review the recent script, the costume designs, the actor choices, etc. before I can feel confident that they won’t screw it up this time.
Gigantic thanks to Casey McKinnon for taking part.
Let it further be known that all your bases are belong to her, and she proudly endorses brownies.
