I really think think Prince Caspian was a big improvement on the first Narnia installment. As you mentioned it just had that adventure vibe and the action and fighting scenes were much improved. The first was kept two child friendly and it suffered in my book as a result. Definately C.S. Lewis' best book for mine also.
