Adaptive Blue has been working on transforming the browsing experience for a while now, and they’ve come up with some pretty cool ideas. On this page you’ll notice a widget that shows you my Amazon Wish List that tells you it is powered by Adaptive Blue. Built into that widget is the… well, okay, I don’t know what… code? that enables SmartLinks on this website. If I make a link to Amazon, or IMDb, or many other sites, a little bubble appears near the link, and clicking that bubble opens up a world of internet options for whatever product I’ve linked to. Like if I say… the new Indiana Jones movie was awesome! You’ll get that little blue bubble film reel that will let you go to any number of sites listing that movie.
Well, Adaptive Blue has a new “product,” and it may turn into one of the coolest, hottest things on the web. I hope it does anyway, because with enough users I would love surfing with this thing. It’s called Glue (I’ll give you all sorts of links below), and it is a Firefox plugin that takes your entire online social experience to products you visit.
Let’s look at this picture real quick, because like a lot of things online it is easier to explain by seeing.
This is Glue at a product page on Amazon. When you enable Glue, any time you go to a product at Amazon, or a movie at IMDb, or etc., the Glue bar drops down after the page finishes loading. The far left of the bar shows the product. Next, are your friends who have visited that product — anywhere, not just at the same site where you are. Next, are recent Glue users who have visited that product. Then you have the blue heart so you can “like” the product, and the “2 cents” where you can give a short, twitter-like comment on the product. You can even easily set Glue up so that it will automatically twitter whatever you put in your 2 cents.
That’s pretty much it. There are many other features, like connecting a wide variety of services to Glue, and adding friends through various means, looking at the people who come up on the bar to see what their 2 cents are, and so on, but the real beauty is the simplicity. There are a great many websites that are already, I guess… Glue‘d, and I’ll give a list of some below, but you can also stick Glue on any site or product you want through the small Glue button which will be in the upper-right of your Firefox browser.
Imagine all the friends you have Facebook, MySpace, and wherever else getting Glue, and whenever you look up a movie or book, or shop for anything, your friends would pop up right in your browser and let you know if they liked it or not. Or, find new people who seem to have good taste, so that you’ll have their 2 cents when you check something new out. Easily twitter your friends about a cool product you find. And, certainly more and more to come.
This is a very new product, and the people at Adaptive Blue are waiting to hear what additions users might want. I mean new like late October.
Like many things in a similar vein that try to socialize the online experience, it isn’t as cool as the theory yet, because there just aren’t enough people using it. The beauty of this particular product is that it doesn’t really need to be in order for it to be tremendously cool. In the early stages, it’s perfectly useful for you as long as you get your own friends involved.
I’ve spent a week or so cruising around with this, and it’s a great idea. It looks slick, functions well, and opens the door to a whole new world of connecting with people you do and don’t know.
Check out their video, and then see some lists and links.
