Dancing With The Stars Loses Relevance… And Misty

by Marc Eastman on October 6, 2008

Dancing with the StarsDancing With The Stars reviewsDancing With The Stars reviews is still pulling in serious ratings despite having long ago run through its relevance, but it hit a snag recently.  The goofy amalgam of contestants, comprised of one-third producer-market-expansion-hopefuls, one-third D-list celebrity desperate for the free commercial, and one-third “random celebrity who might actually be able to dance,” has been dealt a nasty blow as it appears Misty May-Treanor will be dropping out.

We’re looking at four out now, and there may be some ratings worries in the future.  Comedian Jeff Ross is gone already, because unfortunately no one who watches the show had any idea who he was.  Actor (let’s say) Ted McGinley is out, because unfortunately everyone who watches Dancing knew who he was.

Dashing the producers’ hopes, Kim Kardashian is out, mainly because even though her specific target audience was probably willing to watch her, they weren’t going to vote.  Dancing hasn’t quite achieved the sort of status that unify the stupidity of a drunk frat into a force that will actually make the call.  Soon enough it will have its own Sanjaya, but “hot babe with rack,” doesn’t have the same driving force behind it as a good, “let’s keep the complete dork who can’t sing on the show.”  Worse for Kim, NanaNana reviewsNana reviews likes her some Sanjaya, but really hates “hot babe with rack.”

Now the show is looking at new problems though.  HotHot reviewsHot reviews off the Olympics, Misty is a marketing godsend.  Just about every conceivable demographic has the hots for Misty, and it’s hard to think who has it in for her.  She has apparently suffered an injury, and is going to pull out of the show.

We have a whopping eight contestants left, and it’s difficult to figure who is going to care about any of them.  Let’s assume for the sake of argument that the thing is not yet such a farce that Cloris Leachman can win, that’s only seven.  Four of those remaining seem only interesting a demographic too young for the show, and no one was ever interested in the rest.

On the other hand, at least this makes the show somewhat interesting.  I’m not saying you’ll find me watching it, but it will be fun watching to see what happens to the show’s ratings, and what caliber of “celebrity” they’re able to sign for the next installment.

Your article is great on Dancing with the Stars. I am a huge fan of the show and am very disappointed that Cloris Leachman is still on there. She can't dance at all and she is rather annoying. She should have been first or second to go.
Misty had a good chance at going a long way...I think she danced well. It's too bad she had to go out that way.
    Keep up the great posts!

Thanks for the comment. I didn't mind the show for the first couple of seasons, but it all went wrong somewhere. I liked the idea that they gave older celebrities a shot, but I don't know what's going on with the show anymore.

    Cheers!
